They have been on top of it from the outset. The figures from Denmark today are terrible (given they only have a population of 6 million).

Our younger daughter lives in London and works in the City - her employer today made sure everyone at the office has VPN access and has instructed all to work from home from Monday next week - they have had no positive cases, they are just taking precautions - does make me wonder if the Government is giving discrete advice to businesses.

Maybe, but I think a lot of businesses are seeing a realistic chance of offices being closed, many staff being ill etc, ie a real disruption to normal business working and so are trying to make sure that they can still operate, and that their suppliers can still operate too.

That’s probably because they’ve seen what’s happening in Italy and are doing something to avoid being in the same situation. I think we in the UK have the benefit of seeing what’s happening elsewhere.

Yes, we got a business email today asking everyone to take their laptops home daily and ensure they have appropriate cables etc on standby.

It is not. I and about a third of my (London) team are now working from home until further notice, but there has been no advice from HMG, discrete or otherwise. This is wrong IMO, perhaps as much as half of the UK workforce can work from home and the time to do it is now.

In other news (and I am not sure if it's good or bad), I was dragged to the pub tonight and it looked like business as usual.

Given your circumstances, why are you not asking them to work from home now?

Not sure I buy previous bloody Monday and history this is very much different, virus unknown territory but American banks are in good shape this time so.

Well, it is an ill wind which blows nobody any good. A commentator in The Times today wrote that holiday lets in the UK are being booked at a phenomenal rate and that prices are going up - many people who would normally go to Spain, Portugal or Greece or elsewhere, are presumably planning staycations this summer.

It seems like the British bulldog spirit is kicking in,we ain`t letting some virus which we may not even contract stop normal life from continuing and so it should! look at Cheltenham today and if your local is doing business as usual then that is surley a good thing. Lets face it 385 cases out of 70 million is feck all,even if say 70,000 get it its still only 1% of the population of the uk.

I will be from tomorrow. On one hand we are in the middle of one of the busiest points of the year and it so hard to WFH if nobody else is - I’ll fall behind, but I do think threshold in London is starting to be reached. The only reason I’ve held back is because figures on London have been low.

I see. I guess the experience from Italy and increasingly from the UK critical cases will be adding more data. The published accounts from the Italian ICU doctors are scary enough and they talk of severe respiratory problems for some younger patients too.

I hope it works out well for you.

There may be all sorts of factors which differentiate a mild case from a fatal one. Some may even be genetic or social.

I remain of the view that there is no predicting the progress of this.
