This says 'as of 20 Feb', so it's either the figure on that date or the average for the period up to 20 Feb?

The Italian rate averaged over the period 24 Feb (first deaths) - 15 March is 4.65%.

Not sure what others think about that figure but even accounting for Italy's aged population that is alamringly high

My mum & dad are now self isolating. My dad especially idxs social creature, out at the club 3 or 4 nights a week for a game of dominoes or snooker and a good craic with his pals (all similarly 70+). In addition, the pair of them won't now be having our two daughters once a week after school, instead just dropping them off here to wait till Mrs S gets home on her 'full day'. And also the pair of them are stopping their trips to places like M&S, Dunelm, garden centres for a coffee (just to get out the house for a couple of hours).

I personally think this lack of social interaction will kill my dad especially quicker than Covid-19.

But surely, if they’re only testing those who are in hospital, a lower number of tests means lower admissions.

Naughty school, in that case. Schools were told by Government on Thursday they HAD to send these out on Friday.

Of course, that involves a hell of a lot of work (I'd estimate a total of 34 man-hours of IT work alone on Friday, not counting the time spent teaching teachers and giving the kids their logins) and I'm not surprised that not all schools managed it.

Or so they said but nothing like this has happened so I expect quite a lot is going on behind the school scenes this weekend. We'll see.

No new letter but the theory last week was either closing Wednesday or more likely Friday. A W/E science fair was cancelled today.

If there is to be geographical isolation and some kind of road checkpoint system, I assume the school would have to close anyway.

EU to pool members' health resources

The European Union has announced a series of measures to pool resources among its 27 members in order to help to fight coronavirus and protect national health services across the Continent.

The president of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, said the aim was to ramp up the production of protective equipment like masks and suits, and to prevent it being exported outside of the bloc without authorisation from EU governments.

Under the measures, equipment would be shared across EU members instead of each country making it for their own use.

Even worse for those self isolating at home will be the fact that most will sit in front of their TV’s watching News 24/7 or contributing on line on threads like this...that will be seriously injurious to their well being...far better if they ring up friends, chat on the phone, read some good books, listen to music etc etc and rely on good neighbours to do their shopping....

I agree and as repeatedly has been said it is happening in a wealthy region (by anyone's standards) with one of the best health systems in the world. The UK government simply can not run the risk of the same thing happening here and must lockdown immediately.

Doctor on 5 live has just said that we will all get this, there is no running away from it. Locking down is just delaying when you will get it, not stopping you getting it. And I think this is what needs to be emphasised, as we can’t run away from this.
