And neither did they close all their schools, there have been some closures in Daegu and Seoul but all some others did was delay the start of the semester by a week. I just can’t see how closing school is going to protect the elderly. Personally, I am going to keep my children away from their grandparents and I would imagine a lot of people are taking a similar approach

Europe has failed in that respect and we are seeing the repercussions. I worry for the UK especially given we're hardly testing. We'll soon be at, or close to, Italy's level.

I fully agree that they have slowed the spread but the virus is still there. Also, they have not followed the same approach e.g Japan closed all schools, SK closed some in Daegu and Seoul, and Singapore kept theres open.

so who is going to home school kids for months on end if both parents work? By the way I don’t have this issue as I don’t work so if my kids are home for months on end then so be it. I just don’t see how we can close schools for such a long time when you have kids doing gcse and a levels.

As for what caused this outbreak to begin with, my belief is, from all I have read about it so far, that it was a lack of good hygiene standards in China (in Wuhan anyway) that was chiefly responsible. That is why the authorities in this country have quite rightly been on so much about personal hygiene and washingn our hands regularly.

If the answer was really to do with those who consume meat as part of their diet all over the world, why haven't we seen any outbreaks of disease like this before or at least for a very long time?

Testing is key. It is free and easy to get it done and have results the next day.

On a broader topic, if we want to severely cut down on the risk of these catastrophic outbreaks, we need to both eradicate superstitious mumbo-jumbo crap, and also ensure that affordable food is available for dirt-poor communities in the poorest countries.

I know that it's early days of course, but I think it's patronising and irresponsible to argue that people will not follow orders if they know that the aim is good and that there is a plan. This is where I also have my doubts abbout the nudge theories (apparently) used by HMG, as there is simply no precedent of the current situation, so their modelling could be way off.
