There is an elephant in the room here isn't there. The amount of money this will now cost and the amount of money that it is being thrown at the problem. I wonder how all those government ministers over the past decade (and before) are feeling. The ones that said there was no money. Suddenly there is. Think if the same amount of money had been spent on new hospitals and bringing care standards up to that which we would have expected by the year 2020. In a measured way. The technology has improved in our hospitals since the turn of the century but I believe the standard of care has gone down in some areas. A decent modern society should have been better prepared for this and in fact better prepared for the state of the Nation's health before this.

This government are IMO the political equivalent of the crew that were in charge of the Titanic in 1912.

The London numbers are extremely worrying and suggest that tens of thousands are already infected.

We are days from a health meltdown.

I have a fuel stockpile but I keep both the BMW and the Defender more than half full at all times. So if the needle is on the halfway mark, it is time to fill up.

This afternoon I went to fill the Defender. There was no diesel at the local garage, no diesel at Tesco in Ashford and none at Sainsbury’s. I had to drive 15 miles to Hythe to find some and then queue to get onto the forecourt.

Things are moving at pace. I do think there is a small but growing risk of a total economic collapse.

I agree with Justin. In the current climate it won’t take much for their to be a fuel crisis and/or a run on the banks.

The dow dropped another 6%. No medicine the governments are giving are sorting anything out.

There have been some quite cruel and cynical remarks on here in the last couple of days and lack of empathy for those youngsters having their exams cancelled. The following may help you to see how devastating it can be in their lives and remind you of how it was to be an 18 year old:-

Surely it stands to reason, given our lack of comprehensive testing of Covid-19, that, as you suggest Justin, we have many more cases than anticipated. It still feels like the virus is one step ahead. It does not feel like we have it supressed under our thumb put it that way. I agree we are a knife edge away from a catastrophe. It is such a difficult balance.

This is very sad to read, even more so knowing your grandson won't be alone in feeling his world is crumbling.

Society is effectively shutting down, slowly and painfully. We can say it is for the greater good, to minimise disruption as much as we can, but it doesn't change how we feel when one of our own is so deeply affected. There will always be individual stories like yours which bring a sobering reality to what is a surreal period in time.

My sympathies.

It shows that this impinges on everybody, not just those whose health is directly threatened. I will certainly try and be more restrained in any comments I might make and less judgemental although I know haw hard that can be with strong feelings on a subject.

At the other end of the spectrum Dad's older brother died  last weekend - he was the last member of his direct  family (dad is the youngest at 86).  They can't hold a proper funeral becuase of Corona virus and Dad wouldn't be able to attend if they did.  He can't get proper closure on this.  They are planning on having a celebration of uncle Jack's life when they can get the older members of the family together for it - Lord alone knows when that will be and it's   not inconceivable that a lot will never make it

Unbelievably my sister (who I am estranged from) flew to the Maldives with her partner on Saturday. A two week holiday. On Monday, the Maldives banned flights from the UK.

At the start of a major pandemic and the biggest disaster since the War, my sister was going to have her holiday no matter what.

A small part of me thinks I may never see her again.

I was a lazy ****** at school and got predicted Cs and Ds, knowing I would actually make the effort in the exams (and got straight As). This would have screwed me over big time!

So if they didn't try then it's tough sh*t. They ain't getting any sympathy off me.
