I don't know what the timeframe is for the predicted deaths total. We won't get close to those numbers of deaths over the next few weeks, one would think. What about winter when a second wave is likely? Is that why the deaths are predicted to be so high?

The cynic in me wouldn't put it past this government to exaggerate figures to make them look better long term. However, the figures are coming from the models not the politicians?

I keep receiving emails from various businesses, all telling me that their staff are now working from home.

Late figures, late press conference and Boris asking if they find it fucking useful.

I have to say the tone of Boris is a total embarrassment today. He is not coming across as Prime Ministeral.

I am so annoyed. Excuse my language

Sorry to sound boring but 20,000 deaths dwarfs any numbers we are seeing elsewhere , this is clearly BS surely .

CMO: UK numbers will continue to rise for another 2 weeks. Peak could start to fall after if people follow advice and do social distancing, and more beds are available.

I only hope that some expert out there can come up with a vaccine against the virus, or if that isn't possible then some kind of medication that can counteract the worst effects of it, before the end of this year.

Seems like it's being blown out of proportion."  I patiently explain the death rates amongst the elderly and the effect on the health services where cases have ballooned.

You may have seen a video on Twitter where a bunch of young people said they were still going to party. One guy said "it's only a virus"....

Engineer due to visit this morning called to check nobody in the house was ill, then when he arrived proceeded to put on rubber gloves before coming in.  Had the same conversation; he said his mum was 70 and he was trying to stop her going out - but hadn't realised the threat from the virus was so great. Told him under-50s were mostly safe; he told me he was 51....!

It seems inconsequential to some I realise but having to deal with young people in tears as their chance to shine in end of year exams has been removed from them to be replaced by what appears to be poorly thought out un-policeable alternatives is deeply saddening.

Goodness. why can't he give a straight answer. It is "don't know yet" that is fine:

Q: Is there any evidence young people are being affected worse than expected?

Whitty says most people who get this experience just a mild illness.

Older people get it more severely, he says.

But he says that does not mean that there will not be severe cases amongst some young adults.
