Indeed I remember the Gaia theory very well.


 


Does anyone else remember the line from one of the Smiths in the first Matrix film?

Having read that Buzzfeed article I've gone from concerned to really quite anxious about how events over the next few weeks will unfold. We could probably survive for three weeks without going out but that might not be enough.  I'm still trying to decide when the risk will become too great to venture out to any shops.

Pubs were asked to close here a week ago. A few opened over the weekend but social pressure was enough to close nearly all of them. I posted a link yesterday about police checks on pubs opening In West Cork. Apparently, they raided one pub and found a table with a few drinks. When the police searched further, they found 3 customers hiding in the cold room. One of them said that he was afraid of the virus and that he thought that the cold room would be a safe place to hidelaughing.

If Spain has gone to one update a day it gives them a very slight drop on both new cases and new deaths. If they haven't gone to one update, things are going to be very bad later today.

March 21st - 3355 new cases and 233 new deaths

Well, it looks as if Gaia has decided that Homo sapiens is taking up too much space and resources and needs cutting back in the interests of sustainability. Ouch!

I have AS, the relief for which is monthly injections to effectively knock out my immune system so it doesn't produce the proteins which cause inflammation; helpfully I also COPD 


I have an MRI scan scheduled for tomorrow at a hospital which has already curtailed face to face appointments.


I was not reassured when I contacted the MRI department on Thursday to ask for guidance and was advised, rather glibly, "It'll probably be OK to attend". The response didn't really fill me with confidence 


I'm not one to either panic or ignore advice, but part of me says why put myself at risk when I'm probably in a vulnerable category ? I'm thinking it's probably better to continue with the symptoms I have, rather than possibly exposing myself to a virus that has me earmarked.

The Times has a report saying ICUs may be reserved for the under 60s. 


A senior director at another acute trust in London told the Journal: “Given we’re in the low foothills of this virus, this is . . . petrifying.” He said that “clinical thresholds for admissions to intensive care”, such as setting an age limit of 60 years, needed to be “quickly agreed”.

Sorry to hear about your friend Moomin. Fingers crossed. It highlights 2 things which are annoying me a great deal:


1) People convincing themselves they had COVID-19 in January or February. Until the Dutch study is published we are shooting in the dark to an extent. However, I think it very likely most people are fooling themselves and that could be dangerous in itself


2) It is only old people who need worry. The data sets are not comprehensive enough yet but there are signs that it is hitting younger people with no diagnosed medical conditions harder than expected*. That of course does NOT mean that older people and those with underlying conditions are not at much greater risk. 


* follow the White House briefings and simply ignore the orange idiot - listen to Fauci and Birx

You need to consider that many older people are not being given the chance to recover. Desperate choices are being made as to who will be given an ICU bed. One of the reasons that the critical demographic is becoming younger in overwhelmed hospital settings.

My hubby had a colonoscopy following a routine bowel cancer test.  He had some small polyps removed but they left a larger one they didn’t want to disturb.  A biopsy showed it was pre-cancerous and they decided to remove that part of his colon. They did his pre-op in mid January expecting him to have the op within six weeks but of course things have changed drastically.


The hospital hasn’t said they’re cancelling his op but neither have they called him back yet.  The worry is that we don’t know how fast it’s growing, if it will turn cancerous, or if it already has. We’ve considered going private but there’s still the risk of him being far more vulnerable post op!  It’s a real dilemma but we’re sitting it out for now with fingers crossed and we know there are people in far more desperate situations.

Plus, as I thought you'd realised by now, these measures are about trying to stop the NHS collapsing under the weight of severe cases, which are running anywhere between 5% and 20% depending on which stats you study.


 


I'm afraid this is a reality check about our way of life and our, in the developed world, cocoon that we take for granted that mostly spares us from nasty viruses.

To be fair to Boris, he’s having the most difficult and testing peace time term of office than any other PM has.  With Brexit, flooding and now this virus!  At least he’s stuck with it and hasn’t bottled out, unlike the last two PM’s.

I really wish I had gone out and got the garden supplies I need a couple of weeks ago. I have lots of jobs I could be doing with all this time at home but need concrete, paving slabs etc. Really feeling would be foolish to go to B&Q though!

I was thinking about the petrol pump transmission yesterday as I had to fill the car up. I didn’t have my 50ml bottle of hand sanitiser (bought a few months ago luckily as it was on special!) so made extra site not to touch my face and washed my hands as soon as i got home. Might go out and clean the steering wheel, gear knob, door handles etc as well.

Been out in the garden with the kids this morning but feeling very distracted. I think the news of moomin’s friend has hit me that this is getting close to home.

It’s enough to drive anyone potty. 


We have to remember that despite nothing being risk-free at the moment, the risk is significantly lower if you don’t come into contact with someone who is actively displaying symptoms. Surfaces will always be a risk which is why we need to wash our hands frequently and not touch our face when out in public. 


If you follow these steps and avoid too much contact with others then I’d like to think the risk of contracting the virus is still RELATIVELY small. Relatively being the key word.
