For Heaven's Sake!!!

What a ridiculous response from you, but completely expected.

What is the matter with you?

Nothing racist in pointing out who are the main culprits in the trade in pangolins, poached ivory, rhino horn and the like.

There is more excuse in Africa with its endemic poverty and illiteracy.

UN Report:

https://www.un.org/en/chronicle/article/will-china-say-no-wildlife-trade

"Killing elephants for their ivory, slaughtering tigers for their pelts and bones, and fatally hacking the horns off rhinos have reached epidemic proportions in recent years.

Unfortunately, the bloody trail leads to Asia, particularly China and Viet Nam, where the demand and price for products from endangered species have sky-rocketed, propelled by fast-growing economies, an increase in purchasing power, the rising demand for rare animal parts to be used as ingredients in tonics, as “status symbols,” or investments, and the availability and accessibility of these products in the marketplace.

Although these endangered species are protected by international and domestic laws banning the trade in their parts and derivatives, loopholes and exceptions are actively created and exploited by those who benefit from commercial trade in wildlife.

While the State Council of China banned the buying, sale and use of tiger bone more than twenty years ago, large industrial tiger farms have emerged in the country with the sole purpose of farming tigers for the trade in their parts and products. Under pressure from commercial interest in these “tiger farms,” wildlife authorities issued licenses for wineries and taxidermists, giving their tacit approval for the commercial trade in tiger bone tonic wine and tiger pelts used for home décor.

They may have become a technically advanced country in a very short space of time - in many ways they have overtaken us - but culturally it will take them longer to catch up - maybe not until their older generation have passed on. Remember that the UK was continuing to slaughter huge number of whales into the 20th century and only banned the import of whaling products as recently as  1973.

Many of us saw the TV news reports in January about what was developing in China and then the rest of Asia; I'm sure you did too. That, in my humble opinion, that was the time at which governments all over the world including that of the UK should have realised there was major trouble coming down the track. It should have been a case of recognising the coming danger and taking appropriate action at that time.

I get that this is the first time there has been an occurence of this virus anywhere in the world and that the information about it wasn't always great, especially at the start. That said, the fact that so many people in China and then the rest of Asia became seriously ill and many lost their lives to this virus in the early weeks of the spread of it should have been more than enough evidence that made politicians in Europe and the rest of the world realise that this virus was not something to be taken lightly.

It would have been no good just banning flights from China, Iran and Italy because by the time they were known to be a problem it had already spread beyond those countries.

International air travel is a wonderful invention; viruses cannot recommend it strongly enough.

I know a number of people who had a bad virus either just before Christmas or just after. It also seems strange that a virus that was around in China from November (and in large numbers in some areas) didn't make it over here through the thousands of people who made the journey in that time.

Having said that we have been able to chart the spread of the virus from those first cases in York and it has followed an expected development. If the virus was around before Christmas why didn't we see a much faster spread - particularly considering the social gatherings around Christmas. Surely hospitals would've been overwhelmed much earlier given the infectious nature of covid 19?

I could be wrong, but as far as I recall, there was no mention at all from any news reports I saw towards the end of last year of COVID-19; I guess this was more than likely to do with the fact that the Chinese authorities tried to cover up the outbreak there. The first I can recall of it was on the BBC circa mid-January.

I have no knowledge of how many countries were affected by the time it was first mentioned in the British media. However, the first cases in York that you referred to were diagnosed back in late January meaning it had been in the UK for more than a month before HMG raised the alert level.

Although the infection rate in Italy seems to be past the peak, the death toll figures are terrible.

EDIT: The Italian govt has just said that it doesn't believe the infection rate has peaked yet
