My view is the government remains behind the curve. We should now be implementing a stricter lockdown in the UK.

You get the feeling there is still just too much movement and inter population mingling.

I wonder if it is a different picture elsewhere but up here people seem to be very much adhering to the government’s advice and more extreme measures would have limited impact.

And that was a monumental mistake which I believe could come back to haunt the Johnson government in the long term.

It wasn't just this country which IMO was too slow to wake up to the danger posed by Covid-19 and take appropriate action a couple of months ago. My own feeling is that most of the world away from Asia probably took the view that because is started in the far east, it would only affect the countries in that region and would leave the rest of the world largely untouched. That was where us, Europe and other countries including the USA went wrong.

John, with respect, it is nothing to do with me or anyone else trying to an armchair expert or anything like that. It doesn't have anything to do with me being right or wrong either; it is a matter of my opinion based on what I know about how this pandemic started and all that has taken place since.

Many of us saw the TV news reports in January about what was developing in China and then the rest of Asia; I'm sure you did too. That, in my humble opinion, that was the time at which governments all over the world including that of the UK should have realised there was major trouble coming down the track. It should have been a case of recognising the coming danger and taking appropriate action at that time.

I get that this is the first time there has been an occurence of this virus anywhere in the world and that the information about it wasn't always great, especially at the start. That said, the fact that so many people in China and then the rest of Asia became seriously ill and many lost their lives to this virus in the early weeks of the spread of it should have been more than enough evidence that made politicians in Europe and the rest of the world realise that this virus was not something to be taken lightly.

There was a mention just before the BBC virus update went off air that Virgin Atlantic were seeking £100's millions to be kept afloat.
Whether Branson owns all these companies with the Virgin name, but if he does sounds a bit rich he could not use Virgin media money or somewhere else to keep afloat. Sounds like he was a bit underhand with his staff when this started as well.
I haven't heard anything since this was first mentioned though.

Start of a strategy change in Sweden it seems.

Sweden cracks down on public gatherings, ditching 'light touch' strategy

Announcement comes as the number of deaths in Sweden due to the virus rises by a third in a single day

The virus is unlikely to go away now so best to slow the spread and get herd immunity whilst preventing the NHS from crashing.. such prevention will mean more lives saved from the virus compared to a NHS that's crashed.

Stopping it by locking everyone in their home's will only delay the virus, but will also cause unnecessary other issues. But locking everyone in their home's still means people need to eat, and huge numbers will be needed to police every town & city... so people will still mingle and thus the virus will continue to spread.

I know someone who lives close to Southampton docks.
They report that the docks are normally noisy and can be heard at night. They are unusually quiet so I think that means many goods aren't moving at all.

People STILL aren't taking this seriously !

Normally I go for my "Boris perambulation" very early or late and rarely see anyone.   Today I took off at 2.PM  and probably got a more realistic view of what is going on in my small part of the world (village /  mainly rural walk).

First I encountered "loves young dream" couple  hand in hand - had to jump into the hedge to avoid the daft bint -  no way were they going to go single file. They obviously couldn't give a "monkeys" !

Then I encountered  the "old crone" with dog around the back of  Toad Hall (the local Banksters house) narrow path- 0.05 MPH with no passing place - did she step aside  when she could to let me pass with 2M- no,  she beckoned for me to pass her with 2" to spare and got annoyed when I refused to go pass and  scrupulously maintained my 2M   Given her age I could well be responsible for killing her if I pushed by and happened to be carrying it.

Finally, along the back field  of the estate it was like f'king  Butlins. amusement park  dogs, kids, balls and   parents all running about in groups and intermingling.

I gave up at that point and diverted from my route.

There really is no bloody hope- a reasonable slice of people in this country give every impression of being congenital idiots

Not sure what the Govt. can do  except shoot a few of the b'stards as an example  maybe

Maybe it's time for ID cards.  Anyone ignoring the rules should be told they will lose the right to medical care if they fall ill.  A quick scan of the card and their record is marked accordingly.

In this part of Dorset there seemed to be more traffic going past today compared to yesterday. Neighbour goes off wherever he goes and comes back and his friends drop by from time to time which makes a mockery of the restrictions for the rest of us.
