We are testing all hospitalisations, so if 7000 are hospitalised then we are testing 7000. When we change who we test then the numbers will go up.

Hard cheeses can be eaten long after the use by date - at worst, just cut any mould off.

The snag, I find, is that the cheese goes all funny - it sorts of dries out and turns translucent. Offputting!

Now that the prospect of this lasting months and months is firmly on the table (it was before, of course, albeit not publicised as such), I'd imagine there'll be another wave of hoarders, and then - hopefully - supplies can get back to some semblance of normality.

The rationing efforts by the supermarkets seem to have helped enormously, albeit some of the quotas could do with looking at (it seems daft, for example, that Tesco allows you either 3 individual cans of soft drink, or 3 crates of 24 of the same soft drink!)

Yep. My hands are a wreck. Got some moisturising cream I'll be using frequently from now on.

Just checked the German Health Ministry website.

https://www.bundesgesundheitsministerium.de/en/press/2020/coronavirus.html

As expected it's very clear about the criteria for testing and who pays.

Who decides whether a test for SARS-CoV-2 will be conducted?

Currently, hospitals and family physicians decide who will be tested. They base their decision on the recommendations of the Robert Koch Institute. According to these recommendations, symptoms such as fever, a sore throat and respiratory complaints, on their own, are not sufficient. The person must additionally have had contact with an infected person, or have spent time in a region in which the virus was proven to exist over large areas.

Testing should be done only if disease symptoms are present. If you are healthy, a test will not be able to tell you whether or not you will fall ill in the coming days. At the same time, this puts an unnecessary strain on our testing capacities.

Does the health insurance pay for the SARS-CoV-2 test?

By and large, health insurance funds have been covering the cost of coronavirus testing since 28 February 2020. The prerequisite is that the attending physician decides whether the patient should be tested.

Wondering where the stuff some of the hoarders have ends up? Parties, apparently!

(There's a time and a place for building up supplies of stuff, especially if you're vulnerable, but a party surely isn't it...)

We must continue with lockdown for another 6 weeks. I would go further to suggest we need a further intensification for at least the next three weeks from Monday.

The Deputy Chief Medical Officer hinted today that the lockdown might continue for six months.

What will the criteria be for a return to normal? Given that infection rates are very low in my part of the country, very few people in my area will have developed immunity.

I also read today that some midwives are being redeployed - a quite deplorable decision.

How much of our economy has really shut down though? Many people (could even be half of workers) are working from home, most of construction continues, food retailers are obviously booming, even many estate agents still seem to be open (with closed doors).

The travel and hospitality sectors are obviously being decimated, but it must be a complex picture overall. Arguably countries that rely more on tourism will suffer more.

Several reasons are cited. It seems the most likely one is a lack of labs able to process tests. I believe in the UK there are about 12 and they are all owned by the NHS / government. In contrast the German healthcare system apparently is able to call on the services of a large number of private labs and consequently has FAR more capacity.

I doubt they will learn.. historically many things have come out of China..

Spanish flu,

Asia flu,

Hong kong flu,

SARS..

And now covid-19

4/5 becoming pandemics!!

And these all in the last century or so. Goodness knows how many more things in the past have originated from that way.

Well if I have to self-isolate, I might as well treat myself. Got a nice belly full of red wine and steak this evening. 👌

If you can, just make the most of the situation you're in.

Except that it did not originate in Spain.

Whereas it is 100% that COVID-19 originated in China and that there is a connection to the "wet market" in Wuhan.

The exact origins of Spanish flu are not known for certain though it is now believed to have originated in north China and was brought to Europe with labourers.

Asia flu originate back in China in 1956 before spreading out.

Hong Kong still full of Chinese with traditional cultures and behaviours.

This is a genuine question.

Have we had an official update on the PM. I am not talking about twitter posts. I’m talking about an official update.
