I hope he's fortunate too. The only "good" thing to come from this is the possibility it will lead idiots who think it is a disease only for old people and those with "underlying health conditions" to start worrying more about their own situations. It has been clear for weeks that although some factors change the odds considerably whether we as individuals live or die after contracting corona virus is a lottery.

This is known to be happening in the West Midlands and health professionals are aware of it. The police will stop people from sunbathing in parks, even if they are yards away from anyone else, but they appear reluctant to enforce action on this topic - looks like the police have learned nothing from the grooming scandals!

If this is the case I can see why there might need to be a blanket approach to prevent people who don't understand cross infection fully and doing extra things whilst traveling. I ask because I don't like bandwagons or witch hunts where they may not be valid. So trying to step back and considering the facts we have:-

  1. She clearly broke the rule regarding unnecessary travelling.

  2. She didn't break the rules on social distancing (Her own family, isolated in car, going to another house only used by themselves)

  3. So no risk of cross infection because of above (other than the police knocking on her door rather than phoning)

  4. Are RTA's known to be the biggest risk for ambulances being called? I suspect they are of those that can be reasonably reduced although there are many other social activities that lead to ambulances being called (e.g DIY accidents).

On balance I think she set a bad example and probably had to go. Does she deserve the level of hatred she is receiving. probably not, as nobody was hurt and as she didn't have an accident. I think there are far worse things going on out there and the police and media should be concentrating on those.

As you say, she wasn’t breaking social distancing rules, but the same could be said for other activities that have had to stop, such as going fishing.  There will be circumstances where the ban isn’t necessary for social distancing, but it would be hard to separate them and there’d be those abusing it.

It's fairly clear now that the lockdowns are working with Italy and  Spain slowly turning this around and we should follow in about 2 weeks. I think our peak in terms of daily deaths will probably be next week and could easily be close to that of Italy & Spain.

However if we and most other countries don't prepare a proper test, trace and isolate regime, then we'll either get into a vicious lock & release cycle or a much prolonged lockdown with a much bigger impact on the economy. We really need to be ready to this when the number of new infections comes down, many Asian countries have demonstrated its success.

It’s truly staggering that last weekend they were mooting the idea of antibody tests being available from Boots and Amazon ‘within days’ - now look where we are. None of them work!

I think the desperation to share good news / give hope, is leading people to open their mouths prematurely.

The government really need some sort of comms expert on board.

On a personal level, my mate has pulled through. His high fever and persistent coughing lasted for 9 days, he says that night time was the worst as this is when he was finding it harder to breathe. He is a fit guy in his late 30s with no known conditions and he describes it as the worst experience of his life.

Interestingly, his pregnant wife also seems to have contracted it from him, but with much milder symptoms developing a few days later. She only got a slight fever and some  dry coughing for 4-5 days and she has now fully recovered. It's all anecdotal of course, but I think it shows again how the same virus can impact similar people in very different ways and we don't know why. It could be genetics, or exposure to different viral loads or the conditions of the lungs or something else.

On a slightly different note, I had my Ocado delivery on Saturday (almost everything was there except yeast). The driver seemed in a bit of a state so I asked him if he was alright and he said he was upset because he was 45mins early for the previous customer and when he phoned him, he said he couldn't make it back yet as he was at his parents. The driver then burst into tears as he told me that his mother is in intensive care with CV19 and he just can't believe how selfish some people are.

Can somebody just confirm that the Scottish Medical Advisor who has now resigned and is uniformly suffering enormous vitriol is because she traveled unnecessarily? From a previous question about this a couple of weeks ago i was told the reason was because they wanted to cut down on traffic to prevent ambulances and hospital resources having to be used on RTAs. If this is the case I can see why there might need to be a blanket approach to prevent people who don't understand cross infection fully and doing extra things whilst traveling. It has been a very clear message.

The Scottish CMO blatantly disregarded it.

I’ve been largely avoiding social media, and media in general. Focusing on enjoying the time at home, getting jobs done and spending time with the kids, which was in very short supply in my “past life”.

Because I worked long hours and late nights I didn’t have much of a social life anyway, it was pretty much restricted to weekend bike rides and/or pub visits with a group of friends, but that’s really the only thing I really miss. Yesterday we had a Zoom chat with six or seven of us sitting at home or in our gardens with a beer or glass of wine. Then my wife did the same with her friends while I put the kids to bed.

As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, on a personal level I feel happier and less stressed than I have in a while, though I know that could easily change if friends or family fall ill. (My wife’s great aunt is 104 and lives in a care home, so we are rather concerned for her welfare.)

Planning for 'phase 2' should gave been part of the overall strategy agreed weeks ago, with the resources & apparatus starting to be put in place from that moment.

A comprehensive 'trace, test, isolate' programme takes huge effort, resources & coordination. It can't just be effectively created from scratch in a week or two.
