This is a great idea and one we should copy in the UK:

Most people recover within a week, but if their symptoms worsen or they still have a high temperature at the end of that time, the instruction is to fill in a form on the NHS 111 coronavirus website if they can – and to call NHS 111 only if they cannot do that. Depending on their answers, they may get a visit from a doctor or be admitted to hospital.

Health authorities in the southern German city of Heidelberg have introduced a “corona taxi” service, which allows medical personnel to visit patients with the virus at home and assess their progress. This was introduced after virologists and other doctors recognised that it often comes in two waves and that typically on the eighth day, patients’ health can take a turn for the worse.

Patients with confirmed infections or suspected to have coronavirus are being called on a regular basis by student doctors manning phone lines, and based on their accounts, a taxi crew can then arrange to visit them.

Four of the taxis – small buses usually used for school runs – are constantly travelling around the city visiting patients.

Stats from hospital trusts and GP surgeries according to the Doctor's Association UK:

72% of doctors cannot get hold of an FFP3 mask when they need one.
77% report shortages of long-sleeved gowns.
43% cannot always use a visor or goggles when they need them.

yes it was, there are zero reliable reports  that he was on a ventilator this morning. All the news outlets and government sources are saying that he was moved to an ICU this afternoon, and there is still no indication that he is on a ventilator. I would suspect that he will be though at some stage.

There are some slightly hysterical (not in the funny sense)comments appearing here. As far as we know the PM is not at death's door. His death is not a foregone conclusion. If it helps I have a 72 year old previously healthy acquaintance in hospital on a ventilator. It's early days but after three days his breathing has improved and he is breathing with less assistance now. I don't know how it will pan out but people do recover after ventilation. The PM will get the best possible care. He has a good chance.

The mishandling of the Italian outbreak by the European governments (including ours) has been monumental. N.Italy is a proper economic hub, it has heavy industries, services and a lot of tourism (and Feb was skiing time and half term for most of Europe). It's also geographically in the centre of Europe and it has a huge flow of people both to neighbouring countries, but also to other hubs like the UK. easyjet has 7 flights daily from Gatwick to Milan alone!

I still don't understand why people who have been there were not screened upon their return in February, when we knew that the number of infections had started to rise there and we all knew about the mortality rates, the ventilators etc. And I am not saying this with hindsight!

Boris' illness has been following a similar track; each bulletin has disclosed a more serious condition than previously while simultaneously denying that anything serious is going on. Boris isn't dead yet, not by a long way, but my prediction is that he will be so seriously ill as to be unable to carry on as PM for some weeks.

The second mistake they made was in not acting in February when it became abundantly clear to all that the situation with the virus in Italy was deteriorating fast on a day-to-day basis. It beats me why people from this country were still being allowed to travel there when it was known that the situation there was getting so bad, and why people returning here from Italy and other countries known to be affected by the outbreak to the UK at that time were not screened when they returned here.

These steps and others which have been mentioned by MM and others, are ones that could and should have been taken by our government and others in western Europe (and the USA too) which would

(a) have had a much less draconian effect on people's day-to-day lives, and

(b) very likely have prevented many people from becoming ill in the first place, and almost certainly have saved many lives.

As a timeline showed further up this thread, the Chinese knew they had something terrible brewing and out of control. As a duty to the world they should have closed their own borders there and then. But no, they tried to hide it and in a few weeks it wreaked havoc with the deadly spores loose around the world. All for the sake of finance and their economy.
They have been pretty quick to pick up the baton again, buy shares at knock down prices.

Now, our PM is seriously ill.
5,000 of our countrymen are dead.

For those trying to mute the blame on China, Just remember they are responsible for all this.

Further to the above, as someone who has been advised to self-isolate for 12 weeks owing to having an underlying health condition, I am also awaiting a letter from the Scottish Government or the (now former) CMO for Scotland.
