Quite simply, if the pre-lockdown R0 figure (number of other people one infected person infects) is, for example, 2.6, then for the infections to drop away as quickly as they came, the R0 figure needs to become the inverse; 1 divided by 2.6, which is 0.38.

Chris Whitty, I think, said that they believe the R0 figure is now somewhere between 0.5 and 1. Even if it were 0.5, it will take longer for the number of new infections and deaths to subside than they built up. If the R0 figure is now 0.8, then it will take nearly 4 times longer for the disease to die out.

Of course the R0 figure is dynamic and can change, is affected by immunity within the population if that is changing, and would also be affected by any relaxation or tightening of the lockdown.

I think the clapping idea was well intentioned (probably as a result of lots of images from Italy), but the idea of suddenly getting together for a minute or two (because the virus has taken it's eye off) just shows how dumb we can be. The scenes from Westminster bridge are truly bizarre - what on earth were the police, on site, thinking about letting this number of people congregate?

Aerosols can survive in the air for up to 3 hours.

In a wide open space this is not usually an issue as they become quickly diluted. But in enclosed spaces its a problem. We know, definitively, that people more than 2m away can easily be infected in an enclosed public space. Even 10m+ has happened. In a wide open space I think the 8m rule is fairly safe though.

On my runs I take no chances and go for 50 (this is also why I continue to drive a mile at 5am to the wide open area where you can see someone 50m away)

Personally I love the clapping and communal show of support for our carers. So much so it brings a tear to my eye. I find it comforting that so many people are on the same page. It has made me feel more patriotic than I ever have done before.

That all said, it should always be done safely, and I would never judge anyone who chooses not to.

Fed up of all of this crap. The reason we are in this mess is, in part, because people can't behave themselves. It shouldn't take a libertarian like myself to tell people about the need for 'social responsibility' at a time of pandemic.

I would rather, if they must, they clap and whoop on the eve of the lockdown being eased, or when the final restrictions go!

And frankly the CMO from scotland behaing like a prized muttonhead is really only an avatar for all the stupidity that is going on on a daily basis. I'm getting up at sodding 5am to avoid being completely housebound and authorities like the police are literally having self egrandising fests in the street. I'm pissed off, I've been taking this seriously since January. Some people haven't even taken this seriously for a day.

I think the “clapping” is quite an emotional, personal, and subjective topic so I’m not going to attempt to put forward an objective argument.

All I’ll say is my opinion clearly differs from some on here, which is fine.

I will continue to show my support, and I hope people do so safely.
