Indeed.

The argument about lives versus livelihoods is zero to do with whether someone is a Brexiteer or a Remainer.

Personally I am split on the issue - I think it is beyond absurd and deeply damaging that garden centres remain closed for example - their product is perishable and is viewed outside by the purchasers - surely they could introduce the 2 metre rule and social distancing and reopen their doors for plant products (but not their cafes of course). Just one example, but a pressing one.

Even here, in the middle of nowhere as far as Kent goes, there is a noticeable increase in traffic. Yesterday the walkers were out in force - packs of eight or 10 of them. All wearing day sacks. No distancing.

People are increasingly ignoring the lockdown. Johnson’s prosaic little speech this morning will not have helped.

We either lockdown until R0 is well below 0.5 and use the full weight of the law to enforce it. Or we don’t and just let it rip.

As for people out and about, all I've seen so far through the window is the postie today, but one of my friends reports seeing groups of picknicers in her local orchard yesterday... groups of extended families, as she put it. (She was out walking her dogs, and she reports that there have gradually been more and more people around of late).

The longer this drags on, the more people will push to just let it rip IMO. People will want to see something happening and as we've seen already some are pushing the boundaries, if not walking right through them. I can't see BoJo's speech changing attitudes much...

Exclusive: National alert as ‘coronavirus-related condition may be emerging in children’

Quote

Alerts issued to GPs and children’s intensive care doctors
Very small numbers likely to have been affected
May be ’coronavirus related’ or a different ’infectious pathogen’ with similar characteristics
Little known so far about the syndrome
A serious coronavirus-related syndrome may be emerging in the UK, according to an “urgent alert” issued to doctors, following a rise in cases in the last two to three weeks, HSJ has learned.

An alert to GPs and seen by HSJ says that in the “last three weeks, there has been an apparent rise in the number of children of all ages presenting with a multisystem inflammatory state requiring intensive care across London and also in other regions of the UK”. It adds: “There is a growing concern that a [Covid-19] related inflammatory syndrome is emerging in children in the UK, or that there may be another, as yet unidentified, infectious pathogen associated with these cases.”

Little is known so far about the issue, nor how widespread it has been, but the absolute number of children affected is thought to be very small, according to paediatrics sources. The syndrome has the characteristics of serious Covid-19, but there have otherwise been relatively few cases of serious effects or deaths from coronavirus in children. Some of the children have tested positive for Covid-19, and some appear to have had the virus in the past, but some have not.

The fact that many fewer children than adults have had serious illness with the virus or died remains the case.

Our Homebase opened at the weekend and was phone and collect. Anything in store was available, except for plants. All reports say this was doing well.

I'm interested in how the vaccine testing will work. I'm presuming a group of volunteers will be given the vaccine and a control group given a dummy placebo injection without any of them knowing who had the real vaccine. I presume, being the civilised UK we won't inject them with a dose of Covid-19 which could make them become very ill but will leave them to carry on as normal. (allowed to break the lockdown though?). I'm not sure if there is a first stage too just to make sure the injection has no harmful effects itself then they are exposed to the general population and see who gets it? That might be difficult if the true population infection level is as low as some are saying and falling.

This policy will prolong the need for some sort of restrictions, without ever really getting new infections and deaths down to the sort of low figures that many of our neighbours will be reporting in a month/two months time. Maybe that will lead to travel restrictions being imposed on people looking to leave the UK.

Perhaps when denied their holiday in Benidorm or Torremelinos the pensioners and scrotes will take this seriously...

I agree

Nonsense that supermarkets are allowed to sell plants, clothes and TVs, which are "non essential". Yet, other retailers have to remain closed

I think all shops should be opened with social distancing
