My worry is as we try to hit the ground the fear of trade war it usually pushes investors towards safety bets and gold sits at the top of this ladder. No one wants to see a hostile situation surging but the US officials are on course to play with fire.

If the possibility of having a vaccine became a reality by the end of this year, it would surely support market optimism regardless and hopefully I would have thought.

I still think the compelling evidence is that the virus started via animal to human transmission via the wet food/live animal markets in China and most likely Wuhan. Taking everything else into account surely this is where the main pressure should be put to change practices. People say it is difficult because it is a cultural thing. There are some funny human beings out there then because I love my fish and chips from a proper "chippy" but as sure as hell if I thought I was going to get a deadly virus from there you wouldn't get me anywhere near it !!

Interesting. 2 takeaways for me, bars and restaurants will not be opening anytime soon and the advice that offices should not hotdesk. Hotdesking has been the growing policy for many offices over the past years so it’ll be interesting how they respond to that.

Whatever you think of our daily briefings and how staged they are you have to admire the good old British politeness. The ineptitude of the questioners has often matched that of the government responders but there are never any heated excchnges. All "thank you for your excellent question .... " ...and is there anything else you would like to ask? .." Compare that with the US ones where it is just full of boasting, name calling , cutting people off and just plain ignorance Whatever we think of having closer ties with the US it is clear we will not get dragged down to their level!

On another forum I frequent I posted a thread on their "Coronavirus Forum" which had "CV" in the headline and I was asked to change the "CV" to Coronavirus or Covid19 as the mods didn't know what I meant by "CV".

Ah, yes, her. I saw that, it was a couple of weeks ago. She is very good. Fingers crossed that they actually get some of the volunteers infected.

It was easy for Jenner. He just got some poor unsuspecting child, gave them the vaccination (cow pox) and injected him with smallpox, the biggest all time viral killer. Thankfully it worked!

About 1.8 million people living in Germany must have been infected, more than 10 times the number of about 160,000 confirmed cases so far, the team led by medical researchers Hendrik Streeck and Gunther Hartmann concluded. [source: Guardian]

So that's just over 2% of the population I think.

It wouldn't mean it didn't start in China. Plenty of people would have left China for holidays in any case. It just means China closing its International borders sooner wouldn't have prevented the pandemic.

Just been reading the Irish proposals for the opening of cafes/restaurants and bars. They plan to allow cafes/restaurants to open in phase 3 which is currently planned for 29/06. However, pubs are not due to reopen until phase 5 (10/08). Pubs are not happy about that and are due to meet government officials this week to discuss their plans.

Under their proposals, bar areas in pubs will become ‘dispense’ areas only, with no sitting, standing, ordering, payment or drinking at the bar allowed.
No more than four people would be allowed for every 10 square metres in a premises, with table service a requirement in all pubs, which would only serve a maximum of six customers seated at tables.
Live music and DJs would not be allowed and there would be possible limits on the number of people using toilets at any one time.
Meanwhile, customers would be required to use hand sanitiser upon entering a pub, and staff would be required to wash their hands every 30 minutes and to maintain a safe distance from customers.

A pub as you describe is completely pointless - people would rather be at home.

I just get the impression that things will become very nervy & stressful in a pub very quickly with all these additional rules. To be frank once people have had a few it'll just be unworkable in my view.

A gastro type pub may be a little easier.

Actually, that aforementioned well dodgy pub (called Gillespie's) is now all boarded up with notice of closure, so I'm kind of hoping the night club will follow suit. The whole area will be so much better off for it in terms of lack of rowdiness but it also relies on custom via foodie type bars and there are (or rather, were) a lot of them around here, so things may not be the same. I think that bubble might have been burst.
