Loads of places now at 28C so seems likely at least 1 will hit 29. Wisely dispersed heat too, almost countrywide.

The record breaking 6 days consecutively above 40c here in Perth this January was very well modelled ahead of time. Interesting that once again this spell in the UK seems to be flagged well ahead of time. Providing of course it happens.

That’s the one saving grace of this modelled spell. Extremely dry air.

The temperatures are now starting to drop back here in Edinburgh, so those values which I reported in my last post on this thread now look like being very close to today's actual maximum temperature in the end (for Edinburgh, that will be officially confirmed later on when the 18z raw SYNOP data comes in for that particular station).

ICON 12z definitely a 40+er, and equally definitely a 2 days of 40+ run.

Looks like 43C will have been broken today in Spain. Highest hourly reading so far was 42.7C at Talavera.

BBC weather has 45C on Wednesday and Thursday for Extremadura (eg Badajoz). Spanish record is 47.4C so that is probably safe (for now).

Today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank has just been confirmed by the 18z raw SYNOP data for there as 26.9°C which is 80.4°F.

In the end, today ended up being our hottest day of this month there so far by quite a considerable amount, and today was also the first time this year that the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank had gone above 80°F.

42.9 looks like the max from Spain today, at least from the stations that send out automated synops.

Spells like these always emphasise to me how less prone we are to extremes of heat on this side of the Irish Sea. The max. over here today was 25.8.(my own location was just shy of 24).

One more sunny day tomorrow before a cold front on Monday night cools things down and ends our warm wave.

A lovely and sunny start to the day, with that noticeable warm, summery smell in the air. It's already 17°C here, so it might be a hotter day than expected.

Matt Hugo now saying that OK yes there is a chance of extreme heat at the weekend but it's a symptom of the transition to an unsettled end to July. The GFS and ECM charts this morning don't seem to support that idea, as they look to be fairly HP dominated after the weekend.

On the subject of heatwave signs, there was a lovely display of altocumulus clouds before sunset yesterday evening which I always associate with hot spells.

The temperature here in Edinburgh is already at around 20°C as at 9am BST (08:00 UTC) this morning, so this could well end up being yet another hot one just like yesterday.
