I don't really see the logic in closing schools.

A red warning has been issued and national emergency level 4 warning.

That though, is just like the thing.

I’m about 10miles south of the red zone so ridiculously nothing will be triggered here for schools etc, where as 20mins up the road will be in emergency mode!

Will be interesting to see what the official reaction is to this. Hubby a National Highways inspector, so expect not to see him much (bit like winter snow!). No 2 son landing at Heathrow late afternoon on Monday.

As an ex-teacher, most schools are either rambling Victorian piles with few windows, or the 60s style glass on all sides design, with windows that only open about an inch to stop kids throwing things/themselves out of. And they’re possibly the worst as it’s like being in a blooming greenhouse (even the blinds are normally pretty shocking & little use).

Also, although I’m well out of the primary teaching game now, many teachers can’t afford to live near their own schools (the premium on houses close to good school is well outside of an NQT’s price range) so anything forecast to disrupt travel for staff could easily force a school closure. Doubling up classes due to illness is one thing, being in a greenhouse classroom with 60+ sweating, whining 8 year olds would be my idea of purgatory.

I have no idea if it's the first red as I never really take notice of the heat alerts anyway!
At least it will be mild!

Here's an example of a mitigation measure prompted by a Met Office heat warning: Hammersmith Bridge wrapped in foil during heatwave

What's interesting about these amber and red warnings which are going to be in place for extreme heat is that the fact that there is no corresponding yellow warning for that anywhere.

These warnings are after all, being issued under the very same warning system (in addition to the heatwave warning system which currently only covers England and Wales) as those warnings which are commonly issued for other weather types such as snow, rain or wind.

Under that system, you don't usually get any amber or red warnings being issued without any yellow warnings for that same weather type being issued somewhere (usually over a larger area once those amber or red warnings are in place) and so, this is the first time that I can remember this actually happening.

Given that the amber warning area has now been extended up to the Scottish Borders though, I would therefore have expected Edinburgh to be within any yellow warning for that if there was one.

With all the focus on the North and E Anglia on Tuesday don't forget Kent is also one of the last places to lose the high 850s, and the North Kent coast gets the benefit of being downwind from the downs which trap the channel air to the South.

Meteologix, whose maps are the most detailed on the internet for the main weather models (but which I don't seem to be able to post a picture of), consistently show a peak just South of Canterbury of 41C vs 39C elsewhere in Kent and up into Essex. That's in the Brogdale area, which is just outside Faversham off the M2 and North of the Downs. It's also where my newly planted vineyard is, so I'm more than a tad worried about the impact this heatwave (and the drought this month) is going to have on the vines as there is no irrigation.
