Just out of interest, what was the UK's all-time highest temperature record prior to the 37.1C recorded in August 1990? I'm guessing it was set during the scorching summer of 1976?

A sobering thought about the 80s is that despite several summers, 1983/84/89 being considered very good, 35C was never reached in the entire decade. These days it's reached pretty much every year.

However, I was 9 in the summer of '89 and I recall that summer as having a lot of fabulously sunny and very warm weather in June and July, but August was a bit of a disappointment. In some ways, it was a bit like 2018 which also went somewhat downhill in August after a great June and July.

OK so to help out and explain what I've been doing with ensembles I introduce to you the Adiabaitc lapse equation!

Its quite simple.

Take your temperature at 850hpa and multiply by 1.053 and you will get what the surface temp should be in ideal conditions! Again for these extreme hot plumes this is going to be a good approximation. Again you will need a low humidity and cloudless skies for this to be reached.

The equation is in kelvins so for 25C at 850 you have to do (25+273.15)*1.053  - 273.15 which gets you 40C

Applying this equation for a few T850s we get:

T850 22C -> 37.6C

T850 23C -> 38.7C

T850 24C -> 39.7C

T850 25C -> 40.8C

T850 26C -> 41.9C

T850 27C -> 42.9C

T850 28C -> 43.9C

T850 29C -> 45.0C

T850 30C -> 46.0C

T850 31C -> 47.1C

T850 32C -> 48.1C

T850 33C -> 49.2C

T850 34C -> 50.3C

You can perhaps see why I got so excited about that 18Z run last night showing 28C on the south coast. So for the magic 40 we do really need T850s above 25C (allowing for a bit of lee way with clouds and moisture) .

The door is still open for 43C if the upgrades on the plume strength continue.

The Met Office have slightly downgraded Tuesday's temperature forecast for Hawick in the Scottish Borders to 29°C, but the BBC are still going for 30°C at that same location on that same day.

For the record, the actual highest ever recorded temperature here in Scotland was 32.9°C in a village called Greycrook which is located just to the SE of the town of Newtown St. Boswells which is also in the Scottish Borders (the same town as where the Scottish Borders Council has its HQ), and well to the NE of Hawick.

That record was set on 9 August 2003.

With that slight downgrade in the forecast temperatures for that area, it is now slightly less likely that this record will actually be beaten on this occasion, although I still wouldn't want to be completely ruling that out.

ARPEGE had a peak of 26C in a narrow strip in the Thames Valley and 25C more widely in the SE. Heathrow is at 25.9C at 2pm so seems about right.

That was a day which I remember very well, but I also remember it feeling slightly cooler here in the north of Edinburgh due to a breeze from off the North Sea which was enough to peg the temperatures back at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh to just 26.2°C (although even that was still hot enough as it was).

That is something which I have been highlighting on here quite a lot recently, so I'm surprised that you haven't actually noticed that.

I'm not sure what the highest temperature in Scotland was at that time though, although that was obviously clearly above 30°C given that this was the case even here in Edinburgh at that time.

Then one thing I recall about the latter part of the 1995 summer was the number of times comparisons were made by numerous media outlets between the persistent heat and sun of that year and the summer of 1976. I had seen one or two TV programmes prior to 1995 about the summer of '76 and how hot and dry it was.

2018 was on course to equal or even better 1995 IMO for persistence of good weather, but it broke down somewhat in the past few days of July and August was something of a disappointment in my area at least.

Then interestingly enough, 1912 was a disaster. August 1912 was not only the coldest on record, it was also the wettest and dullest on record too!

Interestingly, the hot August of 1995 came very close to matching or beating July '83 if I remember correctly, finishing only 0.3C below and is still the hottest August on record, I believe.
