Another cool night in many places considering the temps yesterday and those forecast today. Pershore got down to 11C, quite incredible since the maximum there today will likely be in the upper 30s. A true continental climate at work in the UK!

Been fascinating to see the models trend toward a hotter Monday at expense of Tuesday only to reverse trend during the final 24 hours or so. The very hot airmass has arrived a little more slowly, allowing cooler min temps this morning.

The slower pace may also keep tonight from being quite as hot as it could or been, though still probably record-breaking in many spots.

In the meantime, temps should really shoot up today as surface heating initiates vertical convection which both warms and mixes out the surface inversion while bringing down air from above that has higher potential temperature.

I’m experiencing this event in northern Norfolk having managed to end up on a UK holiday during it all. A bit sad at missing the local hottest day on record back home while having to face even hotter conditions here (I’m not great with heat), but glad not to be having to try and work in my south-facing, zero air con office!

Hello everyone

I’m new here.  Quite an interesting time to pop up!  (Having lurked for some time, Brian kindly created an id for me a while ago.)

One thing I’m wondering: is there any prospect of a new UK diurnal temperature variation record today?  I understand it’s currently 29.3°C, set at Altnaharra in December 1995 (I was in Ballater that night, certainly quite chilly).

It was down to 12.8° here (Herefordshire) last night, so not really low enough.  But if any of the possible 40° hot spots got down to around 10° last night, there must be a good chance.

All windows now shut, curtains closed, and towels over the veluxes as makeshift blackouts. Fully immersed my shirt in cold water before putting it on! PWS up at 28C - it's a bit exposed; the true temp is about 1.5-2 degrees lower.

Truly Mediterranean feel upon stepping out just now, reminds me of many a holiday past. Already mid-20s and rising quickly.

You can generate the summaries on this page - you need the WMO code for the station but there is a link on that page to look them up.

The PWS on the river at Surrey Quays which has been bang in line with official stations this year (max until today was 32C last Monday) is now showing 33.4C.

Either PWS can’t deal with very hot days and go more out of line in these conditions, or there are some local very hot spots that aren’t yet being picked up in the official sites.

I'm currently on the bus to Hawick and just leaving Edinburgh where it's already 25°C according my phone app.

It's clearly going to be a hot one today and that same app is even forecasting 30°C for here today which would already give us our hottest day of this year so far by quite a considerable amount.

Weatheronline shows 45c for Heathrow tomorrow, not sure why/how, but amusing to look at all the same.

31 degrees and sunny after a hazy start. The dryness of the air is incredible. You can feel it breathing in. Feels like I’m on the continent.

RH will soon drop into the teens as the heat builds this afternoon.
