We maxed out in Jersey at 37.9c and smashed the old 2019 record of 36.5c

All thanks to those illegal clouds

We actually had hotter days last week in my location

I'd have thought the Scottish borders would have been the hottest bit of Scotland (Edinburgh just shy of 30c, the airport 31), but it appears the station at charterhall is buggered - seems a bit remiss. The next nearest station in Scotland is Edinburgh,

So next up, what is the minimum overnight record for UK which could fall tonight?

Due to the low humidity it hasn't really felt unpleasant. There's also been a bit of breeze. Subjectively it has felt a lot more bearable than past 36C+ days.

Minimum record to beat is 23.9C I believe.

There is a site at Floors Castle, Kelso (Borders). This site doesn't often report on the day though and normally appears a time afterwards. It was the warmest place in Scotland last month for instance as reported in the met office climate summary although the temperature wasnt reported on the day to the best of my knowledge. Could be the hottest in Scotland tomorrow.

Some stations are still rising, with 6pm readings higher than 5pm (eg Waddington 35.7C vs 35.0C at 5pm) Probably not in the record zone though.

At least we have two days available, but I’m still surprised we didn’t get it. I’m still nervous about tomorrow. Only one shot at it left.

May only have been the 3rd hottest day on record - but what IMO is more remarkable is how widespread 36c+ temps have been recording

(remembering that in the famous heatwave of '76 nowhere hit 36c)

Ok, this is interesting.

iPhone temperature in Cambridge just rose to 39C. This usually means a report has it at 38.5 or above. That’s my experience anyways.

34.3°C looks like it was the highest here. That's higher than anything I've seen, including when I lived in Manchester, IIRC.

I don't think there are any records covering hundreds or thousands of years to confirm it is 0.3C hotter or whatever.
People pay a small fortune for two weeks in spain in the high 30s, I have no idea why such a fuss is being made about a couple of hot but breezy days in mid-July - which feel a bit like 1976.
Only that went on for weeks.

I'd be interested to see the soundings. If ARPEGE is right then the 850mb temps today were only about 22C. GFS was suggesting 24C until quite recently, so that may explain why we just missed the record.

Today seamed a bit hotter then 2019 though it was half a degree lower going by max values. But it's hard to compare days when it's so close.
