WRF2k called the maximum in roughly the right place and the right temp. so this is what it says about tommorow.

Normby hill, a little north of s[censored]horpe will probably take the record and it will be somewhere from 41.5C to 42.5C

Why is s c u n thorpe censored? I mean I know its not the prettiest town in the world, but I didn't realize it was so horrifying we can't actually speak its name!

I don't think there are any records covering hundreds or thousands of years to confirm it is 0.3C hotter or whatever.
People pay a small fortune for two weeks in spain in the high 30s, I have no idea why such a fuss is being made about a couple of hot but breezy days in mid-July - which feel a bit like 1976.
Only that went on for weeks.

Funny they never talk about 1995 or 2018, the latter summer being exactly as warm across the UK as 1976 and the former having the hottest August and being the driest on record.

Because “the olden days” finished in 1980.

May only have been the 3rd hottest day on record - but what IMO is more remarkable is how widespread 36c+ temps have been recording

(remembering that in the famous heatwave of '76 nowhere hit 36c)

I'd be interested to see the soundings. If ARPEGE is right then the 850mb temps today were only about 22C. GFS was suggesting 24C until quite recently, so that may explain why we just missed the record.

Herstmonceaux was 22.2 at 12z today.

Camborne had 24.4 at 12z.

I don't understand this mentality, as if public warnings like "drink water and don't sit in the sun all day like an idiot" are somehow hampering your enjoyment? You are still welcome to get heat stroke if you like, it hasn't been outlawed

I think the warnings for 40plus c heat are needed as that is a dangerous heat which we in the u.k. have little experience of.
