Another 11mm to 0900 GMT today so 217mm for the month at Swanston (366%) 😲

Just a tad wet! Been out and about this morning surveying the flood damage around Blackford Hill and surrounding woods. Some paths still closed, one has collapsed into the burn!

The reason why I ask that question is because I can remember you going there before and reporting some really high rainfall totals on this forum for there.

Given that the Lake District has a much wetter climate on average though, you would probably expect that there but Edinburgh is on average, one of the driest cities in Scotland if not the driest city in Scotland on average (I think it's a close call there between Edinburgh and Aberdeen but Edinburgh just nicks that according to sources which I read), these aren't the sort of rainfall totals which we would be expecting to get here.

In fact, it is looking as though even Edinburgh Gogarbank is going to end up with more than 150 mm of rain by the end of the month and possibly even higher than that with the way that this going.

Since I first joined this forum back in the summer of 2016 and started to report those totals on here, I don't ever recall reporting any monthly rainfall totals which are as high as when I'm reporting for this month and that shows just how bad it has been here, especially since this is normally our driest period of the year on average.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 hour total up to 10AM BST (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 9.4 mm
Total since 10AM BST (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 13.2 mm (as at 08:00 AM BST (07:00 UTC) this morning on Thursday
30 May 2024)

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 154.0 mm (307.0% of 1991-2020 May average)
Number of rain days during this month so far: 13 (120.8% of 1991-2020 May average)
Number of dry days during this month so far: 12

More than three times our 1991-2020 May average rainfall has now fallen during this month.

We have now entered into the penultimate day of this month and this spring, and the forecast for those remaining days is just for showers. With that, there is always the chance that those showers might avoid here altogether and if that does happen, we might have already just about reached our final total for this month and this spring.

That would at least give us a very welcome respite from all of that rainfall.

Seasonal Data

Total for this spring so far: 366.4 mm (246.7% of 1991-2020 spring average)
Number of rain days during this spring so far: 39 (128.9% of 1991-2020 spring average)
Number of dry days during this spring so far: 33

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 492.6 mm (62.8% of 1991-2020 annual average)
Number of rain days during this year so far: 66 (48.0% of 1991-2020 annual average)
Number of dry days during this year so far: 50

The figures for Swanston that Crepuscular Ray posts are in for yesterday - another inch pretty much (23.6mm)

That gives 240mm for the month, but that doesn't really describe how utterly awful the last week has been:
  • 210mm of that total in the last 8 days
  • 146mm in 2 days
  • And in the 6 days since then another 64mm - about the average rainfall for May by itself

Absolutely dreadful, worst week of weather EVER in the history of the universe, no exaggeration

Permacast hell may be depressing but it doesn't wreck your roof :-(

About 80mm here which would be around or a bit above average. Definitely more rainy days than average though and drying has been very poor.

At that point in time, it would have been very difficult to predict anything other than an exceptionally dry month here and yet, we then all of a sudden received more than 80 mm of rain in the space of just the following two days which in itself is a month and a half worth of rain going by the 1991-2020 May average for Edinburgh Gogarbank and since then, the amount of rain which we've been getting has just been incredible.

Another incredible thing about this is the local variation in all of this because although 154 mm is an awful lot for Edinburgh Gogarbank, even that's nothing compared to the totals for Swanston.

I know that I'm in the opposite side of the city from you and Jerry but Edinburgh is actually only a very small city in terms of the area which it covers and so, I'm not all that far away from where you are even here in NW Edinburgh.

In terms of the whole of the UK and even in terms of just the whole of Scotland, Edinburgh Gogarbank and Swanston are not all that far away from each other and for there to be such a massive variation in the rainfall totals between those stations is just astonishing.

In fact, that difference is even more stark if you go by the data from SEPA as that shows a total of "only" 125.6 mm for this month at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 127.8 mm at the botanic gardens but even SEPA is showing a total of 201.0 mm for this month at your own local station at Comiston which I know to be just to the south of the Morningside area of Edinburgh.

Definitely been a wetter than average month down here but by no means a washout. Plenty of gorgeous and at times very warm weather to have been enjoyed.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Monthly Data

Final Total for May 2024: 154.0 mm (307.0% of 1991-2020 May average)
Number of rain days during May 2024: 13 (120.8% of 1991-2020 May average)
Number of dry days during May 2024: 14

May 2024 was by far, our wettest month of this year so far and it wouldn't even surprise me if it was our wettest May on record.

In the end, we had more than three times our 1991-2020 May average rainfall and this led to a number of flooding issues here in Edinburgh with the Water or Leith bursting its banks in a number of locations.

Seasonal Data

Final Total for Spring 2024: 366.4 mm (246.7% of 1991-2020 spring average)
Number of rain days during Spring 2024: 39 (128.9% of 1991-2020 spring average)
Number of dry days during Spring 2024: 35

A thoroughly wet and miserable spring with almost two and a half times our 1991-2020 spring average rainfall being recorded. Every single month was wetter than average with more than 100 mm of rain being recorded in every single one of those three months. In fact, each month was even wetter than its preceding month with May being by far, our wettest month.

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 492.6 mm (62.8% of 1991-2020 annual average)
Number of rain days during this year so far: 66 (48.0% of 1991-2020 annual average)
Number of dry days during this year so far: 52

Final May total here is 77mm  (177% average).

Total for Spring 2024 here is 202.5mm (165% average).  Wettest Spring for 6 years, but more significant is that the total Winter and Spring rainfall here comes to 450mm, which is by far the highest I've ever recorded over the last 42 years. Previous highest was in 2012 with 395mm.
