(Meanwhile the dewpoint continues to rise here and I'm glad it takes a while for that muggy air to filter indoors. It's now 19.3, dew 17.8, which feels very oppressive. It's worth mentioning that in the "good old days", i.e. before about 2015, dewpoints only rarely exceeded 18C here!)

This mornings early cloud melted away suddenly and we now have clear blue sky. No wind which is very rare for here. The temperature is rising rapidly and is already up to 19 C. We'll beat yesterday's 20 C for sure

In addition to that, this is also the first occasion since 1 June that our temperature here in Edinburgh has exceeded 70°F.

Sadly though, it's now clouded over yet again after that sunny period which probably made it feel even hotter than it actually is.

Given that we've only just passed the summer solstice a few days ago, I was hoping that this much better spell of weather might bring about our sunniest day of the year as that would have been something which probably would never be likely to be beaten throughout the rest of the year due to the fact that daylight length is now starting to decrease once again. Sadly though, that's not likely to happen today.

In addition to that, a breeze has also picked up once again after the wind had completely died away altogether during last night.

For once a sea breeze has appeared - skewing the base SE'ly winds NE'ly and keeping a (welcome) lid on temperatures. It's still sunny, of course.

It's been 23C since around 10 AM, having peaked at 24.2 just before the breeze kicked in. As is usual, the humidity has dropped a little into the afternoon - the dew point is now 16.3.

Temperatures upstairs have fallen from 30C to 28C - it's still going to be another crud night's sleep to come!

Today now looks like being our warmest day of this summer so far as today's highest temperature of the day so far is 22.7°C and the figure to beat for that is 22.8°C as recorded on 1 June 2024.

For our highest temperature of this year so far, we only need to beat 23.4°C and since the Sun is now back out once again, there's a very good chance that we might well do that.😎

As it is, our highest temperature of the day at Edinburgh Gogarbank is 22.9°C and although that is enough for today to be our warmest day of this summer so far, our chances of getting our warmest day of the year today may well have been scuppered yet again by that all too familiar story of there being too much cloud getting in the way of that, as the temperatures have actually gone up by very little here since it clouded over towards lunchtime.😡

Edinburgh's highest temperature of the day so far is 24.73°C as recorded at the botanic gardens and the highest temperature of the day so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank is now 23.1°C which means that there is still the chance of today being our warmest day of the year so far.

EDIT:

Today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank is now officially confirmed as 23.8°C which makes today our warmest day of this year so far despite all of the cloud cover.

In fact, the temperature has been consistently 20°C since before 10am BST (09:00 UTC) this morning which means the minimum temperature is currently running at 20.2°C as that is the lowest temperature reading so far during the current observation day which started at 09:00 UTC this morning.

This means that if the temperature was to somehow manage to remain above 20°C throughout the night and right up until 10am BST (09:00 UTC) tomorrow morning, we would actually be recording an official tropical night here.

Of course, that is unlikely to come even close to actually happening but what this does demonstrate is just how quickly and how much this morning actually warmed up, especially when it was much sunnier during that earlier part of the day.

Clear blue skies, no wind - might as well copy and paste the past few days' reports!

12.4, dew 10.8 (which implies another steamy day to come), with the low so far being 12.3. Yesterday's high was 24.7, the second such day in a row.
