I have said many times elsewhere on this forum lately that Edinburgh has now become a place where it hardly ever rains any more and indeed, this has now been demonstrated on the latest water scarcity report which has just been released by SEPA, and which can be viewed here  (these reports have returned to being in PDF format rather than as a Word Document, so that is a direct link to this report).

According to that report, Edinburgh is currently at early warning status as regards to water scarcity along with the rest of SE Scotland except for East Lothian, and along with parts of the islands in SW Scotland.

This is obviously as a result of the dry summer so far and given that this has come after after an exceptionally wet spring, this shows just how quickly everything can dry up again, especially in these (so-called) "warmer" months.

Ground levels are said to be average to above average but that was running quite a bit above average not all that long ago and so, the groundwater levels have come down by quite a lot just lately.

Looks like we could therefore do with getting some rain in this part of the world.

A ludicrous 85.4mm meaning yet another month where the full monthly average was exceeded before the mid-point.

Between 2005 and 2023 the average for this period was 27.6mm with a range from 0.0mm in 2018 to 84.2mm in 2015. So this year has been the wettest. Not much wetter than 2015 but that total was almost wholly made up from three different thunderstorms with several dry days and average sunshine. Nothing like the persistent cloud and mostly light drizzly rain of this horror month which has seen just two dry days so far. Beyond ridiculous that there should be two Julys this wet within 10 years. July 2015 ended up as the wettest since 1970.

Year to date total stands at 535mm compared to an average of 346.7mm and a range from 212.2mm in 2020 to 494.4mm in 2016. If the autumn is anywhere near as bad as recent disasters we will end up in unchartered territory with the first 1300mm+ year. Wettest ever year is currently 1872 with 1238mm (which we have already exceeded on the rolling 12-month total).

There truly are no words for what we are being forced to endure here.

Another 21mm yesterday evening at nearby Rothamsted. We had 43mm during the deluge last week. I don't keep a record but there have been several other rain events in July so I expect we're over 80mm now for the month

According to SEPA, the latest totals for this month are just 38.8 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with only 36.6 mm at the botanic Gardens in Edinburgh and there is only a week to go until the end of the month.

I am currently down in Hawick in the Scottish Borders having travelled down there yesterday and won't be returning home until Tuesday 5 August 2024. Because of that, I don't have the access the various scripts which I use for what I report on here.

If anyone else is around who can start either next month's thread when the time comes for doing so, or the usual thread with all of the final stats for this month, please feel free to do so as I might not be able to do so on this occasion.

I hope to be back to normal with that by the beginning of September though.

According to Meteomanz.com, this month's total so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank is 50.6 mm which is 70.4% of the 1991-2020 July average.

According to that same source, a total of 10 official rain days have been recorded there during this month so far which is 87.8% of the 1991-2020 July average.

This means that only at least 2 more official rain days now need to be recorded there between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days.

I don't know whether or not the daily totals on that site cover the proper 9z to 9z official observation days but given that I currently don't have access to my usual scripts or data, that is the most accurate data which I can report for now.

Finished July with 64mm here, just slightly above our average of 56mm.    Almost all of the month's rainfall fell in the first half, barely anything in the second half apart from 3mm right at the end of the month (night of 31st).
