10 years ago, the UK was basking in a heatwave, which is largely overlooked by the record breaking heatwave during August.

BBC forecasts during that period.

9th July 2003: 28.3C at Heathrow Airport


10th July 2003: 29.5C at Gravesend


The heatwave slackened somewhat fora couple of days before picking up again

13th July 2003: 30.2C at Barbourne


14th July 2003: 32.9C at Cardiff, a Welsh scorcher


15th July 2003: 33.6C at Wisley, heatwave reaches a peak


16th July 2003: 31.3C at Crosby, the heat spreads further north


16th July 2003: thunderstorm breaks across the Midlands later that afternoon

Amazing to think that summer 2003 is now 21 years ago and not 10! I still consider it to be one of the best summers I've experienced, although 2018 probably just pipped it for me.

Interesting to see the max temperatures that were reached in that spell. These days they are nothing special although of course August 2003 pushed it to record breaking levels - and the duration of the heatwaves was much greater than some of the recent extreme heat bursts.
I drove down to Argeles sur Mer in early July that year with my young family for a holiday. I remember the heat really building as the holiday went on so that even on the coast we got to 35C. You had a feeling it was going to be a memorable summer.

They were real proper heatwave back in August 2003 then again in Aug 2022 for a week long heatwave since then. Last good summer for me was 2018 and this years rating is stuck at 0/10.

Last year's summer was poor during the key months but had a great June and then the SE had the highest number of consecutive 30C + days on record in September.

Yes summer ended around mid August 2018 but I was very satisfied with good weather on long available daylight hours.  60 days recorded without rain with beautiful parched landscape. July 2022 rank poor too much clouds non stop before and after the 40c heat but not much in my memory due to being too short lived hot snap.

A really great summer. I took so many single days off from work to take advantage. Me and a 6-month pregnant Mrs S were on a beach about 5 miles away from RAF Valley (official weather station) on the day the Anglesey record temp was broken. 

Only 8 years after probably the best summer in NW England, too.

2003 was a fantastic summer. The heatwave in August is really up there among life events for me. I remember the excitement on here when we broke the record.

We’ve only ever recorded 35C+ 28 times since observational records began. 
So overall it’s a very rare event despite it happening more frequently in recent times.
