2003 holds the date records for 5th, 6th and 10th (and almost the 9th)

2020 holds the date records for 7th, 8th, 11th and 12th

The longstanding date records for early August are
- from 1911; 9th Aug 36.7 at Raunds, Northants (just pipping 2003) and 13th Aug 35.0 Salisbury (just pipping 2022)
- from 1876; 14th Aug 35.0 Cambridge (just pipping 2022) and 15th Aug 32.8 Stratfield, Hants (just pipping 2001)
but it doesn't look as if these are under threat this year. (What a long time ago they were!)

But for Monday 12th, which looks as if it will be the hottest day of the current spell, the target is 35.7, Charlwood in Surrey 2020.

I don’t think there’s any danger of 35 being reached on Monday. 32 or possibly 33 but it seems to be getting downgraded all the time now. 29C is the forecast max for my area.

Today totally unexpecting clouds will hamper many areas from warming temps as it due to rise today to Monday under clear sunny skies.  Past warm or heatwave we get many sunny days prior to that.

We were lucky yesterday, a cold front cleared through in the morning which reduced the humidity temporarily. As I look out over the Channel I can see some big fog banks forming and they will roll in later tonight.

Latest Arpege has 33c, GEM 32c and GFS 33c.
I think 34c is probably likely maybe 35c if cloud free.
Shame it's a one day wonder though.

Sunny here, of course, with clear blue skies, and there's a breeze coming in from the sea.

We'll avoid the worst of the heat today here thanks to that wind, but the dewpoint's back to oppressive levels - presently it's 22.8, which is today's high so far, and the dewpoint is 19.2. Last night's low was 16.7, so the warm airmass is firmly in place.

Tomorrow, without the seabreeze and with an added foehn from the Downs, we'll be amongst the warmest places in the country. The MetO raw still has 33 and the text forecast has 34.

I've found trees and shrubs to be more useful... the large hazel in my garden, with the cherry tree the neighbour at the back has, block sunlight from hitting my living room until 7 in the morning, and that gives a valuable couple of hours of cooler conditions. Similarly, the large viburnum at the front blocks sunlight from the dining room in the late afternoon, helping that stay a degree or two cooler than it'd otherwise be.

It's why the trend towards plastic grass and car parks out front makes things worse: my house is, at least, a little bit cooler for having vegetation.

The best way to stay cool in the hot weather tomorrow will be to stay indoors with a/c running!

The window on this side is open as the sun won't be there until about 4/5pm and we have a fan circulating the cooler air from that side. it's been working very nicely, on the hot sunny days we've had, since moving up here.
It's 25.4c outside right now and a pleasant 22c indoors and the air being moved by the fan is still nice and cool.
