As we enter what is now the final week of the meteorological summer, there is some rain in the forecast over the next few days following on from what has been a fairly decent spell of weather.

Because of that, I am starting this thread just now so that those all important totals for the coming days and throughout this month can then be reported on here.

It is often said that the NW of the UK is wetter with SE England in particular being drier but such a classification would appear to assume that all of Scotland must therefore be wet and no-one ever seems to mention the fact that even within such a classification, there are sometimes certain locations within Scotland such as Edinburgh which also might not be getting much in the way of rainfall with that.

The latest data points this out really well.

Since I'm currently still in Hawick, I can report that a total of 1.8 mm of rain has been recorded during this month so far at Charterhall in the Scottish Borders but that compares to just 0.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank with the botanic Gardens in Edinburgh still to even register any recorded rainfall at all during this month.

That should tell you everything you need to know about the fact that it hardly ever rains in Edinburgh any more.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 hour total up to 10 am BST (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 1.8 mm
Total since 10 am BST (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 0.0 mm (as at 6:00 am BST (05:00 UTC) this morning on Tuesday 13 August 2024)

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 19.0 mm (25.4% of 1991-2020 August average)
Number of rain days during this month: 5 (44.8% of 1991-2020 August average)
Number of dry days during this month: 5

It's not as dry here as it is in Darren's (Retron's) neck of the wood down in Kent, but this month is still nevertheless shaping up to be another substantially drier than average month here.

Seasonal Data

Total for this summer so far: 108.2 mm (50.2% of 1991-2020 summer average)
Number of rain days during this summer so far: 24 (71.2% of 1991-2020 summer average)
Number of dry days during this summer so far: 32

This summer is now almost certainly going to end up being substantially drier than average.

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 619.8 mm (79.0% of 1991-2020 annual average)
Number of rain days during this year so far: 93 (67.7% of 1991-2020 annual average)
Number of dry days during this year so far: 84

Despite the dry summer which we're currently experiencing, this year as a whole is still running quite a bit wetter than average overall although that is mainly due to the exceptionally wet spring which we had this year.

Note

This data has been obtained from https://www.ogimet.com  in raw BUFR format, and then converted into a more readable form by my own python script.

In addition to that and by using an old PC which was lying around, I have also set up a home server which can be accessed remotely from anywhere on the planet. This means that if I need to produce these reports in future whilst I'm in another location such as down in Hawick, I can now do so as I will still have my usual access to my data and python scripts even then, thanks to this remote server at home.

Ended up with a very useful 16 mm of rain in the early hours here at Folkestone harbour, should be enough to revive my parched lawn (including the reseeded part). But how long will it be before the next significant rainfall at this end despite talks of an ex-tropical system heading towards the UK?

As for the storm, I have my hopes it might reset things back to normal, ie temperatures around average rather than persistently above, and with rainfall every few days. The last one, Debbie, gave us that one-off very hot day, enhancing our warm and dry pattern rather than destroying it. Maybe the next one will do the opposite...
