Warm here, but more cloud than sunshine (again).

Don't get me wrong - this is perfect compared to recent years - but it's not fit to lace any other 'heatwave' in my life's boots.

A lot of cloud, quite breezy from time to time and those 'azure skies' mentioned above have happened on just one day so far.

This is 'just a bit better than the type of spell which used to be fairly normal', no more.

Well I ain't lying when I say that the upper sky is opaque and there is a lot of quite large Cu floating around (probably 70% cloud cover). Indeed if you zoom in on the MetO visible radar you can see it all as clearly as the disgracefully low resolution image allows.

Yesterday we went out for some al fresco dining and spent the evening chasing menus and napkins around as the wind whipped them up. It was pretty cloudy then and certainly not balmy.

Saturday was quite cloudy as well, and when we went out to a BBQ on Friday evening in Pudsey the sky was quite threatening. It was pleasantly warm at about 19C, but nothing 'special'.

Wednesday was cloudy all day.

We had one 'clear blue sky'day, and that was a week ago on Friday.

EDIT:

This was yesterday afternoon - cloud quite clearly visible http://www.woksat.info/etcvg14m/vg14-msg-1500-uk.html

This was Saturday http://www.woksat.info/etcvg13m/vg13-msg-1500-uk.html

Friday: http://www.woksat.info/etcvg12m/vg12-msg-1800-uk.html

Thursday: Was clear

Wednesday: http://www.woksat.info/etcvg10m/vg10-msg-1800-uk.html

Tuesday: http://www.woksat.info/etcvg09m/vg09-msg-1800-uk.html

Monday: http://www.woksat.info/etcvg08m/vg08-msg-1800-uk.html

Sunday: http://www.woksat.info/etcvg07m/vg07-msg-1800-uk.html

Saturday: http://www.woksat.info/etcvg06m/vg06-msg-1800-uk.html (that's us under the thin but deep convenbction)

Friday:  http://www.woksat.info/etcvg05m/vg05-msg-1500-uk.html Hoorraaahhh!!!

You will see, if you care to look, that on many occasions areas around us were clear. We've just been unlucky with both high cloud and convection.

29.8C is my new max however it's up & down slightly probably a result of the gentle breeze blowing at times. So I'd give an average at around 29.5C.

Sorry for the moan - it's been pleasant enough, but I feel for us, it's a case of 'close, but no cigar'.

I've a question...

I've just used 2 digital thermometers and both had a reading of 28.2C - a drop because of cloud cover.

One is max/min and the other a food probe. The food probe is more sensitive.

Both are located in about as deep shade as your going to get in a built up urban area. The location is in a spot that gets quite breezy. Now a gentle southerly wind is blowing and it's blowing the warmer air from the gardens towards the thermometers and the food probe is spiking higher during breezy moments.

I am wondering if I should still use the spikes as maximums??

After all if they where in a screen slap bang in the middle of the garden (or an airport) this warm air blowing through would count - wouldn't it??

:)

Just back from the beach - in Surrey! Frensham Pond has heated up nicely, water temperature 25C and the sand almost too hot to walk on.

I've been swimming in Frensham Pond in April, when I wouldn't entertain going in the sea - like you say the water warms up much more quickly. Hopefully with all this warm weather continuing, the English Channel might warm up quite nicely.

Unfortunately we've been too busy to go to the beach this year, with lots of prior commitments.

A sensible 21.8 C here on the coastline, but it has been quite sunny all day. The obligatory afternoon sea breeze is helping to keep it fresh and airy indoors while still decent enough to sit in the garden - my kind of summer.

Frensham pond... the big one or the small one? The big one I remember for being bordered by 'Bacon Lane' which forms part of an excellent cycle route

Seems searingly hot here today for the third day running - not noticing the slightly lower temperature at all; 28.7°C is the maximum so far. There's not much of a breeze and that which there is doesn't do a lot to keep people cool. High summer rolls on... well, high summer +4 to 6°C
