I do have an air-con unit but I can only use it overnight when my dad's not home - otherwise it keeps him awake. (As anyone who has one will know, air-con units have whacking great compressors which make a right old racket). I can't afford a proper knock-a-hole-in-the-wall split unit, so I'm making do with one of the portable ones (with a large hose).
So, my strategy at present is to use the air-con for a couple of hours before I go to bed. That gets the air temperature down to 22C or so, which is cool enough to fall asleep with no issues. Within 30 minutes the heat from the other bedrooms, plus that wafting up from downstairs, gets the temperature above 25C. I'm usually asleep by then, so I don't notice it until I wake up the next morning all sweaty and sticky.
If I ever came across a few grand, I would undoubtedly invest in a proper air-con unit, the sort you get in small offices and hotel rooms.

Not sure why so many have been moaning about lack of thunderstorms.
I for one would like this weather to continue all summer rather than see a typical 3 warm days then a thunderstorm THEN nothing but cool showery rubbish for ages while we wait for the next warm spell.

Whichever way you look at it, considering it's a home-grown "UK High" scenario that really is quite remarkable. I can only imagine how much hotter it would have been had we had a plume first!

Seriously though - some of us prefer a mixture of weather as opposed to consistent weather. Some of us prefer a mixture of hot days in summer, and cool days, as well as some rain and the occasional thunderstorm. Likewise, some people in winter prefer a mixture of cold and mild, with snow and rain, as opposed to just cold and snow, which could get boring after a while if it continued all winter.


As they say, variety is the spice of life. Doing the same thing over and over again gets monotonous and repetitive. Thunderstorms are exciting, unusual and when they occur, everyone talks about it, like a winter snowfall, and personally, I am not sure why people want this weather to continue indefinitely - this weather is nice for a while, , and interesting from a data collecting POV but eventually, I want something different, and I want rain to prevent an ugly brown landscape.

Today is impressing me with the rate of temperature rise.


To start things off, temps rose 3.6°C in one hour between 7 and 8am (12.9°C increased to 16.5°C). Since then the rate of rise has been around 1.5°C per hour right up to 3pm so far, taking the temperature to 28.4°C.


Only 0.3°C more now to match yesterday's maximum. Then it's 1.6°C further to Sunday's maximum, which would take some going!

Hazy here at Folkestone where the sky has that milky pale look about it due to extensive cirrostratus moving in from France - the sun is shining quite weakly through it making it appear watery. Not one of the better sunbathing days today.

It is feeling quite comfortable temperature-wise at 23 C with 55% humidity, which I have to admit suit me fine anyway as I can leave windows open to air the house out (which is being a pointless excercise as there is that scent of stale hamburgers coming in from somewhere, smells like I'm living next door to a MacDonalds).

As already hinted by me yesterday, I could use a thunderstorm or three to liven things up a bit, not to mention bringing a bit of life back to my poor parched-looking lawn (third season in a row it's gone like this, I might as well pave the bloody thing over).

8/10 of the last days have seen temperatures hit at least 26C - most of them higher then this (31C max recorded). The past couple of nights have also become more akin to that of a proper heat wave, so all in all i would say its nice to finally have a decent spell of summer.

There was water restrictions for around here in, funnily enough, in Winter 2012 which lasted into Spring as we were at the tail end of a two-years long dry spell, then along came that wet Summer but rainfalls were still below average. I think it wasn't until September that those restrictions were finally lifted.
   I wouldn't be surprised if there are talks of such restrictions soon as people continue to waste the stuff by watering cars and lawns unecessarily. To be honest, there should be one right now as that way it'll conserve our water further still as after all this end of the country is the most densely populated area of the UK, but I guess it'll be a case of the horse having bolted after the stable doors has shut.

Bit of a way off I know but if this carries on through August then I would imagine the Autumn colours will be terrific this year, Autumn 2003 was fantastic - I remember lots of bright reds and vivid oranges.

All this talk of hot nights. I still have my thick duvet on the bed. Temp in the bedroom is typically about 25-26C at midnight which is fine with the duvet turned down to waist level. Window open, obviously, and it's usually cooled down to 21-22C by morning, which surely nobody can possibly find too warm?

I've been waiting for 7 years for heat like this and I'm not wishing it away for anything.
