Definitely a change in weather today in Canary wharf.  Yesterday was hazy sun, but warm/hot.  Today walking to work around 9am, the sun felt that much hotter, though the air temp wasn’t that hot at that time.  Reckon either its due to clearer air – or a warmer plume of air has entered the mix.

Either you can tell today will be a scortcher.  Infact just checking, City airport is currently the hot spot for the Uk at 26*c at 1030am.  it can only get hotter.

It's always been the way of 'official' temperatures. The data recorded by the Met Office for records, etc has to be manually read on standard mercury max/min and wet/dry thermometers (someone correct me if this is no longer the case). This obviously requires people to get out there at regular intervals, which is fine for Heathrow and Kew and Wisley, etc, but not for all locations.
We all like to think our own garden instruments are providing accurate readings but without any scientific or repeatable verification you can never be sure. And if they are not in a decent shaded spot, preferably in a screen preventing wind anomolies, then it's just for fun . . .?

Couple that with light being reflected off glass and shining on other objects, and obstructions like buildings and trees preventing proper air movement, there's lots of things that can affect the temperature.

Most people don't have huge gardens, and put their weather stations in places which could be affected by any of these issues. So whilst you might be accurately recording the temperature in your garden, next door's garden will be different, and other houses different again; in fact different parts of your garden will have different temperatures. Therefore, such readings have no value in accurate national comparison, any more than Jiries' shed thermometer does.

Officially sited thermometers should be away from such obstructions and heat-absorbing surfaces so that the temperature is representative of that locality. Heathrow is a moot point I guess, but rather than recording an incorrect temperature due to a building a few metres away, it is recording the temperature of the whole locality. Yes, there is lots of tarmac and aircraft engines, etc. around Heathrow, but the temperature there is probably representative of the whole airfield (an area of several square miles) so therefore it is valid - unless we pretend that a huge area of the country that is built on doesn't exist.

Wind flows being affected by buildings, gardens traping heat, cars trapping heat/ creating heat. Bricks, tarmac, concrete etc all absorb suns energy and omit it back as heat. Most metoffice stations are located away from the worse of this except for some dodgy station like; heathrow, solent, gravesend. Now taking this into account should the metoffice heat health warnings mention that in bigger towns and cities thresholds will likely to be reached locally???

Regarding shade and stuff are they not suppost to use stevenson screen? To allow wind flow through and block solar radiation?

I still have this thin veil of cirrostratus giving the sun a fairly soft and hazy appearance, but it is also having the effect of making the current temperature of 25 C and the 55% humidity feel very pleasant. As a result, it is easy to sit in the garden without getting hot and bothered, especially with a gentle breeze tickling the hairs on my legs.

If I am a Vulcan, I would say this is acceptable. Live long and prosper.

For all the talk of urban heating I will point out again that the official UK max so far this year was recorded in rural Somerset. There are two Hurcotts in Somerset but I believe this is the spot, near Seavington St Michael:

I had a quick scroll around but couldn't spot the actual weather station.

29.0C at midday at St James's Park. For comparison the highest temperature at the same time on Saturday was 28.6C at Bournemouth. Looking at the St James's Park stats for the last few days the overall max has usually been about 3C higher than the temp at 12 noon, so 32C is looking on the cards.

Just walked to the local convenience store to get something for lunch, and now I'm too hot to eat it. My cheapo garden thermo in shade of a tree says only 28.5C but it feels much hotter than any day of this spell so far.

Slept like a log last night as it felt fairly comfortable. So far, I've been escaping the worse of the heat and humidity (as if you didn't know that by now) but all that could change as we go into next week going by the model outputs, but that's a long way off in forecasting terms.

We're at 25.2C at the moment, after an earlier high of 25.9C. Nice blue skies today, after yesterday's murk, meanign the sun 'feels' hotter (obviously the UV index is higher today)

The truth is grsdually coming out. Here is a quote from Matty in section 2 of this thread:

"The reason I love these hot nights is similar to why I love deep snow. It's hard to explain, but it's something about the stir it causes, the problems, the newsworthiness of it."

At least Matty is being honest, and I think he genuinely does like "hot" weather, but using sensationalism, or the fact that the girls walk down the street with their bits hanging out, as some have said, or sitting in the back garden at 23.00hrs having a beer dressed only in shorts, has nothing to do with honest preference. Wearing just shorts as mentioned proves its too hot.

In winter, thermostats for central heating are set around 22-23°c, because thats the temperature we feel comfortable at, who sets it higher, I suggest very few. Its also set to turn off for most of the night, why, its not just a money saving aspect, but surprisingly its because we prefer to sleep at lower temperatures.

With high temperatures quite often comes humidity, especially overnight when actual and dew point values become closer. As any heatwave progresses, the residual heat builds up indoors, adding to the problem, its currently 29.7°c throughout my flat, and this will only change by a degree or so during a 24 hour period. It will only drop slowly after a few days of much cooler weather. I may be in the minority here, but if I wanted to sleep in a suana I would build one. Aircon is a desirable alternative but has its downside, cost and noise in particular.

Those that glorify extremes, hot or cold, in the main, don't live in an area likely to be affected, and don't have to suffer the consequences. Jump aboard the sensationalism if you must, but please don't express it as a preference.

The winter heatwave continues here, 24c today and but for an afternoon seabreeze kicking in earlier than usual we would have got to 26c I think.

25c a possibility tomorrow before the weather breaks at the weekend to more normal temps.

On course for a very warm July here, not bad for a winter month!

<edit> it is nearly 11pm here, middle of winter, and it is still 18.7c out at Sydney airport, that is crazy for this time of the year! Some real unusual heat around the world at the min.
