Average first innings test score at Lords is 377, so they're not miles off. Crucial little session between now and lunch. Get a wicket here and it's a bonus. If they can put on 35-0, they'll feel a lot more comfortable.

In 19 Test innings, he's failed to reach double figures in 8 of these, and only scored more than 20 on 5 occassions. A couple of big scores (90 & 91) and a smattering 'not outs' skew the average.

Fair enough! Averages don't always tell the whole story as you say - it's just that that's what cricket tends to use. Like all statistics it is probably more accurate the more innings are completed. As a keeper who bats around 7 I have benefitted from the not outs in the average stakes!

and that's the problem with wasting a review. Means you are less likely to ask for a review for a decision which could have been wrong.

Agreed but that adage is mostly about the conditions and the pitch in particular. All 4 wickets look like poor batting, as were several of England's.

If I was an Aussie I wouldn't be too sure about Smith at no.6 - but Clark remains the key wicket. Get him and 200 will look likely, barring another Agar masterpiece....

Regardless of what the Aussie lower order have done with the bat this is partnership to break, Clarke and Haddin can get the Aussie close to England still.

As I mentioned this morning, the convicts have batted like a bad pub team up until the first test. They're back on form now. Virtually every wicket down to bad batting. As for the reviews, can you imagine what's going to be said between Clarke, Watson and the rest of the team now?

Not seen any of the action as I am at work, but sounds like the Aussies are batting like even bigger idiots than we did at times yesterday.
