I am trying to date a storm in Leicester......
It was in the eighties, and it was a Friday night, around 18:30 - 22:00, now, I was and still am really scared of thunder..... as far back as I can remember, and even now, although they fascinate
me, they terrify me.... suppose "the better the devil you know" thats why I am interested in them as well.

Anyway, back to this storm, I was doing a football pools round, that is why it was a Friday, I remember it was a scorcher, and I heard it building in the far distance; and also remember running the last 10 houses to get home before it arrived, thunder was occuring almost without any breaks between the claps, also loads of straight down lightning and what I now know are anvil crawlers!! I also did not stay in the house either, I hate most of all being alone in a storm, so I literally dropped the coupons home, and ran up to the pub where I felt safer.. The storm/s as I think there were a few rolling around lasted a good couple of hours; but I cannot pinpoint the date!
I know its a long shot, but a Friday in the 80's, cannot recall another storm in Leicester, of that intensity, on a Friday evening....
Any chance on finding the date??
Cheers

Utilising my rather clumsy forecasting skills, I've calculated that it does look like the high risk time zone for thunderstorms to break out at this end of the woods is Tuesday night through to Wednesday morning.

Think I'll make sure that the camera battery is fully recharged and there is a fully formatted memory card in the camera itself, not to mention scouting around for an ideal outdoors location (with a shelter to hand should I need it). Looks like being a long night, though.

Apparently we had lots of lightning and distant thunder, I didn't hear or see anything. Looks like that cell will affect the far SW of Cornwall.

Seems that this thundery event projected for Tuesday night/Wednesday morning has been downgraded somewhat to as a few scattered storms over the South West and Southern England. Might still get something out of it, though.
Hopefully I'll have a better idea of it all by the end of today as it all slips into the far end forecasting range of the NAE output.

The latest BBC forecast has the storms kicking off tonight across central southern England as they drift north from France. Likely to be very isolated though (Links below are to the 0z run and so will change by 11am this morning)

Monday afternoon looks "interesting". The area at risk of storms drifts north into the Midlands during the evening

That MCS to the SW of Ireland is certainly chucking out the lightning strikes.

NAE and to an extent GFS want to drift the current MCS over Brest NNE across CS areas overnight, but WRF not so keen.
The fun and games begin Mon evening into Tuesday with some intense activity likely in many areas as the main trough moves in.
Tues looks to be hot, sultry and thundery.

Obviously the main focus in terms of thunderstorms is over the next few days but the ensemble for the Manchester area is interesting in terms of the precipitation signature. It looks very convective in nature so plenty of potential for heavy thundery downpours over the next 10 days or so.
