That was quite spectacular, just as it was getting dark too!  It's moved away South now and it's left a lovely smell of rain, although we haven't had much but the air is much fresher.

It's probably over Sheffield now and should be arriving in Leeds soon.  Enjoy!

Yes, new cells springing up in West Wiltshire, East Gloucestershire, and the Croydon area in the last half hour. The latter should get Central London shortly, which will no doubt be picked up by the media as some sort of omen or good luck for the royal baby.

Meanwhile, the Southampton/Basingstoke/Reading corridor still seems to be immune to any kind of rain, having missed out both yesterday and last week. Hoping for some rain for the garden! Just to scupper it all, I'm about to go and put all the garden furniture away.

My video did suggest things should develop more and more as the night goes on, then calming down a bit tomorrow morning, before the big blow up for the east tomorrow afternoon/evening.

Lot's of lightning around here, but no real storms yet - Suspect it's a case of lightning looking closer than it is in the dark.

I'm typing this from my back yard. The sky is largely clear, but I can see regular flickers of lightning to the east in the distance and a very occasional slight rumble [sn_dead]

Tonight is like old days, sitting in the garden, too warm to sleep watching for flashes and checking two

All gone quiet here now though

Considering I'm basically on the crossroads of west and east I probably won't get anything properly noteworthy at this rate  although if those cells south of Birmingham move directly north it will be interesting for here.

It's gone quiet here now, though I wouldn't rule out more activity during the night, so I'm off to bed to watch the sky from my bedroom window!

Some quite intense flashes to my east now. Some blotchy spots of rain falling here 😞 Not enough to make me head indoors though.

first crack of thunder. no rain. in bed with the fan on, windows open, and certainly the hottest and stuffiest night of the year so far. All feels like it will break any minute. Nice looking radar too.

Judging by recent satellite and radar, the Atlantic trough seems not to be driving our weather as much as predicted; the motion of clouds is still more N or even NNW rather than NNE (let alone NE as per the Met Office online charts that I referred to earlier).

The problem with predicting the potential multi-cellular system (MCS) development is that it ought to be quite a sudden occurance as the unstable plume combines with the Atlantic trough and critical thresholds are reached and then breached.

From reports on here it sounds like there's a lot of evaporation of rainfall at low levels taking place. That's parched landscapes for you!

Multiple flashes and faint distant rumbles from the cell currently over C London. Any reports from the centre of that?
