OK this is the situ. As expected a rapid change to snow in yorkshire now. The black lines indicate cold pools. Basically where evap cooling is capable of turning the precip to snow. The two pools over E anglia and humberside have merged and are now causing a snow transformation in yorkshire. There is a smaller cold pool also starting to develop in SW wales.

OK, so I do head up to Epsom Downs/Boxhill to catch my first snow of the season in about an hour or so? Will it miss me to the West,. will it be rain?

Alton had an intense shower just after 8pm which opened with torrential rain and hail and then a spell of heavy sleet. Temps fell away to 2'C in the heavy stuff

I don't think evap cooling works here. A hill top surrounded by low ground on three sides. Saw an article once saying that a plateau will get more snow than an isolated hill top of the same high due to more evap cooling. Same principal I think.

Conditions are wrong for evap cooling anyway. Far too windy. Anyway the intensity may be sufficient to bring wintriness to the surface, as was the case here.

We were lucky as there was a distinct and narrow line of cells moving down from Basingstoke at the time

Thought I'd for a short drive. At 200 metres it's 2.5c with a sleetly snowy mix. 350 metres it all snow, 1c but not sticking and 450 metres heading towards the Snake Pass summit there was heavy blowing snow. Temp up there was 0c with around 1cm lying even on the road.

Well that was worth doing. Drove to Boxhill at about 9.45 pm started at 2c at home in Epsom and spitting. Arrived at Boxhill and was disappointed to find it drizzling and 1c, precip suddenly got heavier and turned to heavy splodges of ice with the odd complete snow flake in. Thought I'd head home after about half an hour as had fulfilled my desire to see snow, but decided luckily to head along the Dorking Road. As I reached the bridge over the M25 the snow became 'complete' with no rain mix so as I reached the A217 rather than trunging left back towards home I turned right to head towards Kingswood and the A217 Junction 8 of the M25. Reached the junction and parked by the back road that leads upto Reigate Hill, temp fell to 0c and the heavens opened with really heavy wet snow, as the intensity increased the flakes on the windscreen became proper shapes rather than wet snow and suddenly everything turned a slushy shade of white within what seemed minutes. Just arrived home and the snow level seemed to be Burgh Heath on the A217, below that and the temp suddenly rose agin to 2c and subsequent precip was a drizzly affair. Home now, chuffed but being called 'sad' by my wife and a certain member on here who is just jealous....

How do I post a video?
