I am unusually relaxed about the poor prospects for cold and snow . Perhaps its because last winter started late and turned out to be the snowiest winter I have recorded in 20 years with 75cm snow. Or perhaps I am just getting old and boring and prefer the lack of disruption. ..

I presume that's because of your coastal location, for 2010 anyway. North Kent got hit hard and had superb amounts of snow

Medway isn't the whole of north Kent btw, just a small chunk of it.

2005 was the last time IMBY that it snowed every day for 14 days. It lay on the ground throughout, but it was so, so marginal...

I've done ok here the last few years so not complaining at the lack of anything cold to start off with this Winter, I remember people saying the same balderdash this time last year

Also, I remember during the cold winters of 2010 and 2011 how quiet it sometimes got on TWO weather forums yet the charts with perfect with endless frost, snow and Greenie Highs. It was as if a lot of people had got bored within a week of the cold starting!

As I said I love frost and snow but for some people it's just the thrill of the chase.

With so many cold winters in the last 5 years a very mild one is well overdue, I know the weather doesn't have a memory but even in the 60's and 80's you didn't get as many cold, snowy winters as we have had recently, something had to give.

I find myself living back almost in the same place that I grew up in the late 70's and 80's - south-west Wiltshire. Although I remember some great snow events from the late 70's early 80's , my abiding memory of Wiltshire winter is that it doesn't snow before (or at) Christmas, and the, if you are lucky, you might get one shot at some decent snow (and by decent I only mean more than 2-3 cm!). So rare was decent snow that I can clearly recall three main events from the my secondary school years, but that's about it.

When I moved back here in 2005 from Norwich I resigned myself to going back to a less snowy place, but to my pleasant surprise, since 2008 we've done very well (by Wiltshire standards of course) and in a way I think I've become more demanding of my winter weather.

None of this is to say that it is a waste of time looking at weather charts in December down here, its just that I shouldn't be surprised that its not Dec 2010 again. There is a reason that such months are once in a hundred year events.

I won't be moaning about the winter until we hit mid Feb with no sign of cold.

Today was about as grim as it can be - mild, damp, heavy drizzle.
If that's your thing then good luck to you.

We had snow last winter (in Jan - after a very wet Christmas) - but here the snow was always very marginal and I never had 100% ground cover in my garden, though it did at times linger for days in places.

We are much milder than places in Syria, you see snow on the news, even from Colorado to the eastern Sea board there is snow!! This is a dejavu but I guess we shouldn't right winter off just yet. - Maybe come January we will see some wintry weather. Last year winter never started until the second week of January. - Maybe give it another month then start moaning however, it's much nicer to have snow around Xmas.

It's quite interesting to see how perspectives differ according to your location.

Here in rural Kent, this winter has certainly not been without interest.

So far this month, I have recorded 8 air frosts. Yes, I live in a frost pocket, but to put it into perspective, last December I had 9 in total. The December before, 8.

These have included a few spectacular hoar frosts, and a few nights of freezing fog, sometimes very dense.

This has led to a few exceptionally icy mornings where the rural roads were transformed into a white icerink.

Combined with some nice sunshine in between, it's actually been quite a memorable spell of weather.

The tide is now turning to an unsettled and windy spell of weather. Again, not without interest.

All we need now is some snow at the end of the month, and the picture is complete!

Anyway, better go before I get booted out of the moan zone!

8th crap day in a row here to round off the mildest ever December week with a ridiculous mean temperature over 9C

Just vile today - dark, gloomy windy and raining. Almost as bad as the Saturday before Christmas last year. Utterly awful unseasonable filth and yesterday was barely any better. Even people at work who hate cold and snow were complaining about the gloom yesterday saying how much better it would be if it were clear and frosty.

Really can't think of anything positive to say about this disgusting, depressing spell. Yet again the temperature is continuing to rise after dark - up to 8.9C. If it hadn't went down to 3.8C in clearer skies last night - which did not appear until after dark yesterday and were gone by morning - then we would have completed a full week without dropping below 6C

Max temperature here today 11.8c checked back to this date last December 11.2c so hardly any difference but we had some  proper winter weather in the new year and into spring  so the same thing could happen again, fingers crossed.

Well with the exception of a couple of wet and windy days the month has had some snow, limited rain and generally usable and at time pleasant mild weather here in Aberdeen. 😉

Just to underline the fact that this winter is turning out to be a total turd...I have just popped outside and it is blowing a gale and hacking it down with rain!! This is North Kent...not rain lashed North Wales or the West Country? We are supposed to have a continental climate! It is 11.4 degrees outside at 8pm at night?!! What the hell is that all about?

We don't know what next 3 months will bring, I mean just look at March which was in effect a winter month this year.

But not every winter month is going to a freezing snow fest and there are going to be mild dominated winter months. It's that simple.
