Rain also excels at finding all the tiny (blocked!) drain holes in my SLK-battery box was almost up to the brim in rainwater!!! Dumped it all over the pax footwell on turning a corner...now to make like a little dutch boy and stick my finger in the hole!

Having just completed another lycra-clad run, I can report unusual conditions in Dover Harbour.  There's not normally a lot of wave action to be had in the harbour as it is very sheltered.  But today either side of low water there were surfable breakers rolling in like something akin to Cornwall. Splendid.

Very windy and wet nothing like a week ago. I'm sure many are glad for now. Cleared rapidly with a visible mobile line of cloud and blue sky.

Both NAE and Euro4 predict another 12mm for the London area in the next 48 hours, and that's before the main band of rain on NY's Day has passed through.

Wednesday is going to be troublesome across the SW and Solent region I fear. Today's dosage of 12.6mm here was able to generate some slight flooding along the River Avon and more notable flooding along many of its tributaries, though not all that much really.

The point is, GFS is giving 15-25mm widely across the SW and Solent regions on Wednesday, following from 5-10mm tomorrow, and that will produce more of a response, though it will always be a slow process with the main rivers like the Stour and the Avon, of course.

The 12z GFS op run follows that up with some showers on Thursday giving 2-5mm and then something more organised on Friday giving 5-10mm... after which comes what could be a major rain event on Saturday; GFS shows an active frontal system slowing to a crawl, then stalling for a time, before crawling NE, as a marked disturbance develops along it. This delivers 25-40mm+ which is not something we want to be seeing.

The position of the frontal system could well shift away from the UK in future runs, so there's something to hope for in the near future!

It's amazing to reflect on the scale of last Monday's rainfall event across England and Wales - locally, the total was in excess of 70mm in 24 hours, which is very close to the sum of the average figures for all of the projected rainfall events discussed above!

By the way it's worth noting that in my experience GFS tends to seriously underestimate convective developments - not just showers but also squall lines. It was 25mm or so too low with the total for Monday... but to be fair NAE didn't do much better!

I expect Saturday to be worse than Wednesday...Due to amount of rain fall. Could be flooding in more places. Though Wednesday may seem worse due to wind.

Another 25-30mm predicted here by the end of New Year's Day. A road near me called Handford Lane (which hasn't been an actual ford for over 100 years) has reverted to being a ford on and off since the Dec 23 storm. This morning it was flooded right across again even just from last night's modest amount of rain. Also the local ponds up on the common have filled way above their normal level and are right over the paths.

The latest update for my location on the WeatherPro app makes for worrying reading.

Rainfall for tomorrow is now predicted at 31.5mm with a further 33.6mm to follow on Saturday and 22.2mm on Monday. Add the rain predicted for other days including today and there is 120mm in total predicted to fall by Tuesday 7 Jan after which more settled and largely dry conditions look likely. This is on top of the 120mm that has fallen during December.

The app does tend to overplay the rainfall totals somewhat but even so it seems inevitable that further flooding will occur in southern England over the next week.

^^^^ (Trying to quote, but buggered on this PC/Browser/Skin/Editor/wtfk!)...

Currently running right down the middle of the country (England that is 😎 ). .Marching steadily eastwards, but will it stay intact by the time it reaches East Kent? - most W-E squall lines seem to dissipate before they reach us here.

Edit: Referring to Beast's post that is

And then suddenly fizzles out the moment it touches Kent! There's just the trailing rain area at it's rear flank. It has been windy so far for most of today but more like a typical winter's day thing.
The harder stuff is still yet to come tomorrow and while that is expected to be a daytime affair, once again the worse of the gusty stuff will be coming in from the south. If it HAS to keep blowing a gale every other day, can't it at least come in from the western quarter where I'm more sheltered from it?
Still, it could be worse, at least I'm not living in a flood prone area, like parts of Kent still are and that's not going to get any better on that front.
