Confidence in snow depth so high, they've actually closed schools in NH and Boston for 2 days, which is not very common. Normally they have Late Start mornings, where everyone just starts 3 hours after snow ploughs have been out. Shops low on provisions too.

Yep, we'll get this on Sunday, except it will be heavy rain. I really wish the Atlantic didn't exist.

Lucky sods!

25-50cm of snow (with more to come) widely across the UK would be a dream

I have been studying the New York climate this winter. The swings between mild and cold are normal but this year they are exceptional. Check out the -25c 850Hpa's and 496 Decameter heights progged for the Tuesday 7th January.

Hard to believe that New York is at the same latitude as Rome.

My brother is currently in SW Pennsylvania and it looks like they've got a similarly small amount of snow there; the heaviest totals seem to be further north.

Highest total I've seen so far is 12.2" (in Massachusetts) - still plenty of life left in this storm.

The weatherboys seem to have been out with the snow totals - Indianapolis forecast to have 1-3" when in fact it has had 6".

This near the MA/NH border shows probably around 30cm

Should be an interesting game to watch, suggesting it coukld be the coldest NFL gane in history, even colder than the ice bowl

Storm is wrapping up now for the NE States, not a huge snowmaker (by local standards!) with most totals under 12", although some enhancement off the sea led to localised falls of around 20" in parts of MA. Likewise for southern NS it will be a 15-30cm storm, more notable because of the very cold windchill and blizzard conditions than the snowfall totals.

The next storm on Sunday looks interesting for the Golden Horseshoe at the moment with Hamilton and Toronto possibly both seeing 15cm+. Mild air will be pulled up ahead of the storm so a rainmaker for the big cities of the NE States. The mild air may make it as far north/west as Montreal before the next arctic airmass hits.

The difference with the next cold shot is it should get further south meaning very cold temps for the Ohio Valley and into the Mid-Atlantic, as well as the Great Lakes and NE.

-24c at Toronto Pearson this morning. I make that the coldest reading since Jan 2005 (also -24c, I was there at the time )

Just had a look at the Indianapolis forecast. A high on Monday of -23C. The normal high is 2C.

And my old stomping ground of Paoli (suburb of Philadelphia); high of 6C on Monday, crashing to -13C on Tuesday. A major cooldown LOL.

Yes, and that storm (orignially of snow/blizzard and -10c) which hit the eastern USA and Maritime Canada will bring us wind and rain tomorrow. Jet stream moving so fast across Atlantic!

This is the worst start to the winter I can ever remember!

This reminds me of winter 2006/2007 but even then we had a small cold snap between 26th and 31st December. This year we have had no cold spell - well maybe one day of 6c max and perhaps one subzero temp on the morning of 2nd December where we got down to -2c but that's it!!
