I shouldn't read news reports on North American weather, like many of us I tend to focus on the factual inaccuracies ("In Canada, the temperature dropped as low as -29C (-20F) in Toronto and -38C in Quebec City with wind chill on Thursday - the lowest seen in at least two decades there.")
Anyway, moving swiftly on, the storm for today/tomorrow has trended farther west which has the unfortunate effect of bringing freezing rain into play again for Hamilton/Toronto, into eastern Ontario and New Brunswick. Should only be a couple of hours worth in the Golden Horseshoe so nothing on the scale of the pre-Christmas storm, but it could get nasty for NB with up to 10mm of freezing rain. Parts of northern New England will also be affected. Where it stays all snow (eg Detroit) there should be 6"+.
Once the arctic air roars in, as others have noted, it looks brutally cold. There will be a major Lake Effect snow outbreak which could bring up to 3 feet of snow to some places and there will be squalls even in some areas not usually affected due to the extreme cold fetch over the relatively warm lakes.
It's -36c with -50c windchill in Winnipeg, Manitoba right now with the airmass poised to sweep south!
