This is the worst start to the winter I can ever remember!

This reminds me of winter 2006/2007 but even then we had a small cold snap between 26th and 31st December. This year we have had no cold spell - well maybe one day of 6c max and perhaps one subzero temp on the morning of 2nd December where we got down to -2c but that's it!!

Lovely to see it and Toronto are forecasting of -17C max on Tuesday when I arrive so it will be very cold feeling after getting used to mild weather here.  Chicago will see -23C as a max on Monday but as it been modified a bit over the Lakes which by the time it arrive Toronto it goes up a bit.  My wife really enjoying her experience in Chicago and said to me she will go outside to the car park of the apartment where her brother lives with a thermometer to see the temps and take picture of it.

Just felt very pleased that we both booked our holidays to N Americal this year which is a perfect timing as last winter wasn't that interesting.

Anyway, moving swiftly on, the storm for today/tomorrow has trended farther west which has the unfortunate effect of bringing freezing rain into play again for Hamilton/Toronto, into eastern Ontario and New Brunswick. Should only be a couple of hours worth in the Golden Horseshoe so nothing on the scale of the pre-Christmas storm, but it could get nasty for NB with up to 10mm of freezing rain. Parts of northern New England will also be affected. Where it stays all snow (eg Detroit) there should be 6"+.

Once the arctic air roars in, as others have noted, it looks brutally cold. There will be a major Lake Effect snow outbreak which could bring up to 3 feet of snow to some places and there will be squalls even in some areas not usually affected due to the extreme cold fetch over the relatively warm lakes.

It's -36c with -50c windchill in Winnipeg, Manitoba right now with the airmass poised to sweep south!

Indianapolis now expected to have 7-14"; strong winds and so on.

The rain/snow line is just south of the city, but boy, they'll get hammered in the northern suburbs such as Fishers and Carmel.

Hi folks,

Quick post, just checking in with all this extreme weather across the pond. As Graeme reports, for Hamilton & Toronto a bit of a non-event now this storm which just on Friday was showing 15-20cm, now only just 5cm and freezing rain into the mix but only for a hour or two unlike the pre-xmas storm. We got an upgrade back in December with the 30cm+ snowevent so swings and roundabouts for the GTA with this one.

Cold set to re-appear in spades, some very low temps earlier in the week, the -37c at Ottawa on Thursday morning stood out for me  by jings thats cold for a major metro city in Ontario!! With the cold this week, the lake effect snow. Expect to see mammoth snow amounts in the usual hotspots up in Cottage country and down in the Tug Hill Plateau in NY state.

By the way, still raining in Ayrshire - got soaked walking the dog earlier.....

Take Care

Out typical narrow residential streets jammed with cars both sides would be completely impassable probably for weeks.

In 2010 there was about 2 feet here and the next village - which has cars parked both sides could no longer be ploughed without damaging them so they called in a farm contractor who spent a day loading it all into trailers and tipped it away.
That wouldn't work too well in London

Wasn't it only three or four years ago, that lake effect snow fell to a depth exceeding ten feet? Whatever it was, it was a lot more than three feet.

If, on the other hand, it was the wet stuff falling at or just below freezing, then you're absolutely right.
