As James has indicated before, the issue in many parts of the south has been the frequency of convective rainfall between the frontal rain. The warmth of the English Channel and steering winds from the SW are seemingly unending

Having just been out to see the extent of the flooding in my home area, I'm watching the slow moving rain band closely today.

It's hard to directly compare the radar with the NAE predictions, but to my eyes it seems that NAE projected the easternmost band as a weaker feature than the central band, while the westernmost one was predicted to be stronger than the easternmost one but again weaker than the central band.

The reality is rather different, with the easternmost band currently the most active, followed by the westernmost band, with the central band only managing light to moderate rain.

The Met Office precipitation outlook has the easternmost band being very slow moving 4 -7pm along a line from between Weymouth and Poole up to Bath.

That could make for a severe weather event somewhere - flash flooding is a big concern.

I look at this website for a local weather station in Fleet, Hants, about 9 miles away from here, and somewhere that I used to work.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/chrismac/

The amount of rainfall in this area has been astonishing, and this website outlines it well.

Since 15th December, so in 34 days, a total of 284.4mm (11.2 inches) of rain has fallen, compared to an average for that period of about 75mm. That means approaching 4 times the normal rainfall!

In the last month (18th Dec - 17th Jan), the figure is 256.4mm (10.1 inches)

Already it is the wettest winter on records going back to 1997, and the winter is only slightly over halfway through!

Must have been some high totals around Yeovil today, as the front stalled there for quite a while. Looking at data up to 6pm, I'm guessing 20-30mm generally.

It's still holding together as it advances slowly east - it's even managed to reach my home location, which is further east than NAE had it going until the latest run.

GFS seemed to catch on earlier than NAE, and WRF has had the progression east fairly well modelled for a couple of days now - but it failed miserably when it comes to the multiple-band formation... but to be fair it was a complex situation, with one band dieing out only for another to spring to life a little further east or west, this happening several times since midday.

Oh yeah and up to the end of yesterday my home location has seen 327.3mm since 13th December, with 297.7mm in the space of a month.

That's not official, though. My measurements often agree well with Hurn and Boscome Down, but can be 10mm or so on the high side over the space of a month.
