Some really quite strong gusts funnelling off the Pennines at times.

Very high tides and massive waves in Dawlish this evening. The sea breached the main road and a side road (marine parade) was flooded to around 3 feet.

Part of Dawlish station has collapsed with a large section of sea wall collapsed damaging the railway track further. There had already been damage on Monday which had cancelled the trains (this is the mainline to Cornwall) until Friday but it now is becoming apparent it will be much longer now.

Can see a short video here of the waves breaking over the road (and a taxi driver).

Really wasn't expecting it to be this windy tonight. The gusts are louder than during the much heralded storms of earlier in the winter - it's whistling through the wood-burner and fanning the flames even down 12 metres of flue!

Seems to have slipped under the radar a bit, this one. The forecasts at the weekend said breezy but nothing severe.

Almost flat calm here now. Odd. Rain has passed through as well. I may be wrong, but if the rainfall we had here was indicative of other areas further SW then it was nowhere near as much as thought. We only had 10mm of rain here. Stormchaser was bringing up charts with inches of rain on them earlier from this main band.

This would have been a run-of-the-mill low in these parts were it not for what we've had prior to this. Obviously any rainfall is going to enhance problems for those areas already under water.

Horrendous - most of Guernsey east coast flooded.  Amazing images and videos (if you don't leave along the coast)... We live in the second highest part of the island, so luckily ok.

We've had roughly half the event so far according to the models.

Overnight my home location saw 18mm and Reading saw over 20mm, so it's been a more substantial event around here. The models have always showed it being wettest for the southernmost counties.

As usual, convective rainfall organised into 'chains' of merged showers, which then brought a lot more rain to some areas than others. My home location actually avoided most of those, whereas Reading caught three of them - with that in mind, Reading might in fact have seen over 25mm. It was so noisy last night that I had trouble getting to sleep and was woken again sometime between 4 and 6am.

It will be interesting to see just how much surface water is out there - even before the event started there was still a fair bit of standing water from previous events.

Sometimes a vast accumulation of surface water has threatened to block my route to the university buildings - could this be the day that does it?

Agree with Matty. Whilst we still have potentially heavy showers today, the main rain band was rather a regular affair for most. The rain wasn't heavy or long lasting. Alerts were only issued because of saturated ground - which is technically wrong imo. EA issues flood warnings for such cases whereas a MetO Alert should be in connection to the weather event itself.

The system overnight brought just 3mms of rain but the second system in the SW looks much more potent as it was forecast to be for the East Midlands this afternoon an inch of rain possible by the end of the day.

Last nights frontal band gave 4.0mm..rather less than expected.

The main problem for south coast dwellers will be the heavy convective nature of the rain in between weather systems during the next week or so.

Yes, the wind has suddenly picked up. I expect my patch up job on the fencing and guttering will not last long!

Fww we're heading to the south coast shortly. Probably around Barton or Southbourne as high tide is due around midday. Should be a photo opportunity

Seeing those photos of Dawlish is so heartbreaking. What has that lovely part of the world done to deserve this? One can only imagine what is going through the minds of the townsfolks, it's going to be years before that sense of normality will sink in . . .

Over here, indeed there is this gale-force southerly wind (my favourite weather type, not) but thankfully the saving grace is that after the 3.2 mm of rain last night (unless the rain kept blowing over the mouth of the gauge), it is has been quite bright and dry all morning. But, it seems our luck may run out tomorrow.
