Just cleared up some posts regarding Owen Paterson and his detached retina - the original post was insensitive and off topic anyway, apologies to doctormorg and Jive Buddy as your not at all insensitive posts have gone with it.

Onwards... and tomorrow's storm is looking menacing in terms of the cloud mass currently to our southwest. Looking carefully I can just about make out two areas of cloud seperated by a narrow drier line - which is what the high-resolution models such as WRF and NAE have been predicting to remain intact for tomorrow - in fact it results in a strip of England from west to east recieving less rainfall than would otherwise be the case (though still over 20mm). Fingers crossed for the best case scenario!

Walked down to the seafront and took a look around, the sea literally tore up the tiles on the promenade.

This is the first of these ongoing storms to do major damage here in Torquay. Obviously this damage in the pictures is nothing compared to what happened at Oddicombe Beach about 2 miles away.

Certainly a landing at Gatwick last night I'd like not to be repeated in a hurry LOL.
And need to watch today - a lot of rain yes but a few tweaks and the departing flank of the low could deliver a period of very strong winds from the WNW.

Find it strange that the MetO have no wind warning for Saturday, not even a yellow alert.

They mention the wind in the Amber rain warning but to clump it together is not the way imo. Saturday is more likely to have wind issues.

Radar looks really bad. A lot of reds in there. Reminds me a bit of the July 2007 event, when the entire band was red!

1824 was THE event; but more recently the shingle bank has been overtopped in 1942, 1976, 1978, 2008 and even (just about) Jan 6/7 2014

EDIT - afterthought - with Saturday's storm to come we may yet see it overtopped three times in a winter - that would be something new!

Certainly not moving as forecast. Not even close, which is a good thing for this area. It's raining here, but it's light.

Current flood warnings

Chiswell (Weymouth end of the Chesil Bank)

Warning

Flood status last changed: Thu, 06 Feb 2014 10:38:00 GMT

Chiswell

Due to continuing large waves and long swell period the Flood Warning for Chiswell will remain in force for today’s and tonight’s high tide. The times of peak water for which these Flood Warnings are in force are: 12 midday and 10:45 pm. The recent event damage to the flood defences and reduced profile of the beach may increase the risk of flooding. Further stormy weather is forecast Friday through to Sunday. At the onset of sea water overtopping the beach, conditions will be very dangerous. Please ensure that large items, such as wheelie-bins, are tied down and that vehicles are moved away from areas behind the defences. Please follow your personal floodplan, and be advised to keep away from the beach and promenade area.

Severe Warning

Flood status last changed: Thu, 06 Feb 2014 07:39:00 GMT

A361 East Lyng to Burrowbridge

Water is continuing to spill from Currymoor into Saltmoor and Northmoor via Athelney spillway, the old Lyng railway cutting, and over Baltmoor wall. This is causing water levels in Northmoor, including the A361, to continue to rise. The current level in Northmoor is 5.35 m and this has been rising by about 14 millimetres per hour over the last few hours. This poses an ongoing risk to local properties. Moderate, occasionally heavy, frontal rain will spread in from the south during Thursday morning. Between 20 mm and 30 mm of rain is forecast for the area over the next 24 hours. This is likely to cause the River Tone to rise for a time, resulting in a further temporary increase in the amount of water going into the Currymoor, Northmoor area. In addition to our pumping operations, a number of temporary defences have also been installed in an effort to limit the impact to local property. The emergency services are assisting people with evacuation from their properties in the local area

Look at http://www.shoothill.com/FloodMap/ , ye northerners, and don't you dare say that all the press attention is being given because it's in the south!

I'm not on-call today (vehicle is not available), so it's pub time! Hoping the rain is not as bad as forecast for us here in East Kent, so that a) nobody needs us, and b) I don't get soaked before I get a pint

latest Euro 4 has no change, but the radar suggest it is moving more east. Still a lot of rain though

The rain falling at the rate of 1 mm an hour doesn't sound a lot, but when you spread that over the next 20 hours according to the models then that's where the problems start - and that doesn't include the heavier pulses. But, on the other hand, there may also be the occasional lulls.
If this is being a single event in a generally quiet and dry winter (like two years ago) then I would actually greet it but this is just another load of unwanted rain.

EDIT: It's now raining quite moderately - it's just bumped the gauge to 2.4 mm.

Have bought sandbags and sand and off to fill them.   Its a war out there! The 72 hour accumulated rainfall predictions are alarming to say the least.

Suffice to say my local council dont have a clue and are failing in their duty of care, been there, done that bit!
