Winds are noticeably backing more westerly. That's worse for here and it's showing. We're facing right into the Bristol Channel. Really roaring here.

On a meteorological note, a very interesting event, but please stay indoors and stay safe everyone!

Truly atrocious out there now. Worst gales here for years. Stuff crashing around everywhere. What's most impressive isn't just the gusts, it's the sheer constant windspeed. It's a constant never ending roar outside, interspersed with ferocious gusts. Awful, awful conditions.

This is a bad one. I think the morning will bring pictures of distruction across a wide area.

The swell is already impressive and the winds sustained around 60mph gusts around 75-80mph. One lamppost near south parade pier was swaying so badly i wouldn't be surprised if it topple before the night is over.

I've known and seen many a wind storm like this in Portsmouth, nothing to exceptional. I think though because of the amount of them in such quick succession of late, repares haven't been able to be done and more coastal and structures are likely to suffer as a result.

I also agree that we have had much, much worse before. 87 is obviously the leader but I remember many severe gales which were clearly worse than this, notably through the late 80s and early 90s. Tonight is the strongest winds of this winter though.

Complete horror show tonight. Easily the worst storm I've experienced since moving here in 1997. Expecting the damage across the south to be making the headlines tomorrow.

Oddly calm here now. Was going for it earlier but little now not much. No sign of any damage or power issues so far.

Not sure about this being the worst storm of the winter, at least not back in Hilsea end. There was one back end of December early January*** that was horrendous for Hilsea end, sustained winds of near 65mph made for a very noisy early hours... a lot worse then what it is atm.
To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if parts of southsea sea front have experience 90mph gusts this evening.

*** so many storms this season I can't keep up 😃 😃

Just been outside to sample the air and it has got noticeably windier in the last half-hour.  Now the strongest wind I've known here since 1987 (but nowhere near as bad as that).  I can't feel the house shuddering under the gusts of wind the way I did in '87.

LGW Just as badly hit, with plane after plane executing MAs. Meanwhile QTR5 appears to have given up, and is off out over Kent towards the channel (hope they're not going to try Manston!!)

I guess it's better that it's happening during the night while most of us are indoors.
