Everywhere is saturated. Even here in the south east?

This winter sucks.

Excessive rain, damaging wind, almost no frost, not a flake of snow.

As well as being dissapointing, I'm worried about the impact a virtually complete lack of frost and snow will have come spring and summer.... all those bugs etc. that would normally die off even in a winter like 1988/89 may have survived.... Will this cause a problem or I am I worrying about mothing?  We're in uncharted territory here imo so really don't know.  I suppose places like the Isles of Scilly and the west coast of Ireland must have quite a few winters with virtually no frost and they seem to get by!

Although I hate walking the dog when it's wet - which meant this winter really sucked, and frustrated not to see any snow whatsoever (I'm not counting the couple of sleety flakes I saw earlier this month), I have found this season much more interesting than previous Bartlett borefests that may have delivered the odd frosty early & late spell as the Euro-high pushed northwards.  The storm of 23rd December was something to behold with its relentless ferocity, and making my way through floodwaters that nearly cut off my the village on the 7th February was an experience!

I can only imagine what the TWO equivalent in somewhere like Germany or Austria is like.... OK, they escaped the rain, but possibly the most boring, unexciting, unwintry, winter imaginable - now that really would suck imo.

Between 2000-2008 every winter (except) 2007 had at least one snowy spell and some several and most had at least a couple of severe frosts, even the winter of 2001/02 brought -10c temperatures and 16cms of snow in two seperate spells.

This year there has been nothing in comparison and I would rather have mild, dry Barty weather than the endless wind and rain of this year.

Another absolutely crap grey windy day with a max of 6C, which it still is now. Some rancid drizzle thrown in as well. This has been another abhorrent week with rain every day and far less sunshine than last week despite lower rain totals. Seems to have been windier too.

If you were making up a winter to be as boring and unpleasant as possible you probably wouldn't even make it this bad thinking that it would stretch just too far beyond the bounds of credulity

In the relative mildness of the late winter brightness, the events of the past few weeks has left me with two thoughts;

A much bigger respect for nature (almost being frightened by it).

And how I feel sorry for those who has been (and still is and will be) badly affected.

Yet another totally rank day from this tiresome winter of unrelenting filth. Was supposed to get better in the afternoon with mild sunshine but it's getting worse with putrid drizzle turning to rain  Wind from the south instead of south west.

As usual it's windy and pressure well below 1000mb. Another thoroughly awful day where it's not worth venturing outside. Hideous min of 6C and it's not got below 2.9C since last Monday morning's frost. Absolutely ridiculous. Both January and February will end up with a lower frost duration than April 2008

Not a chance now of seeing lying snow this winter for only the second time ever and pressure looks as though it will end up 3-4mb below the previous record low for a season with both January and February recording all time lows, the latter the lowest of any month.

Absolutely hateful and by the time it is next possible to get a decent arctic blast it will be nearly four years since the last one

As for a Bartlett far preferrable from a point of view of getting out due to it being much drier and sunnier and much more interesting from a weather perspective because there is actually temperature variation and diurnal ranges instead of it being stuck on 6C all the time.

If winter 2013-14 was a person, then at midnight this coming Friday night, they would have to climb the pearly staircase to the pearly gates and meet St Peter, who would hopefully direct winter 2013-14 to the appropriate place, and I don't mean that place up in the sky!

One thing I will moan about, is the missed opportunity for a real deep-freeze to move in whilst we had all that flood water lying.

That said, we did have a fairly notable cold spell during the second half of March and first half of April 2008 which saw snow falling in a number of places, my own location included. The winter of 2007-08 was fairly mild overall with some unsettled spells, although nothing like as persistent as this season.

Was supposed to be dry today but woke up to more dismal wet weather Utterly depressing especially on a Monday morning. Raining at lunchtime as well. Well beyond the stage of being tolerable now.

So much for late-February producing a cold spell. Just like December and January the 2nd half of the month has proved even worse than the first. The minima have been so disgusting over the past week that they wouldn't constitute a cold spell as maxima. 6C forecast again tonight and more rain No more frost likely this winter. It's desperately poor.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the next few weeks, the last where it is still possible to get proper winter, are written off with mild tripe then in mid-March there will be a flip to cold and snow, when it is too late to get anything meaningful, just has happened in 2008
