How's this for a shock to the system.

According to Langdon Bay's readings, temperatures went from 14.1 C under sunny skies at 11 am to 6.3 C with mizzle and overcast skies at 6 pm.

11.2C the max here today depite glorious sunshine.
And the "solar noon" here was at an angle of 32.5....the sun is really starting to get higher now, I've noticed once it gets to 38.0 and above you can really feel it on your skin, which is around 24th March and onwards here.

I know that from around 10th of February you start to significantly notice the sun's warmth again down here on the south coast. On a calm sunny day in early February even if the air temperatures is in single figures the sun can feel pleasant between 10am-2pm.
Believe it or not but I've actually already seen people with sun burn this season. I'm guessing working outdoors in glorious sunshine all day and with fair skin sun burn in early march is a small risk.

When I go to Newcastle in February the sun is feeble like early January down here 😃

We got 15.3c at 13:45. Cloud started building to the west around 4:30pm so it was blue skies most of the day. I went out with a friend between Torquay Town and Meadfoot and it was incredibly quiet and warm. We both talked about how it was as busy as it would be in August in that particular area and that was probably people coming out to enjoy the lovely spring weather after all the storms. I couldn't believe it was February just 10 days ago!

Peak sun strength here is obviously around the Summer soltice when the solar noon is 59.9

Lowest is 13.1 in December.

Places in the far south of Spain are already 50.0 at solar noon They peak around 77 in June. Even higher for places like Florida etc.

13.4C max which was warmest since 27th November

5C above the typically poor forecast from the BBC this morning. Inexcusable as they forecast 14C for Moray and no reason why it should be much colder here with the wind not coming off the sea

Fascinating link, thanks for sharing :-)

This pretty much sums up why I already suspected - the angle of sun at the latitude of Newcastle on the solstice is the same as what it is just over a month earlier in Portsmouth.

Something else I found interesting is that the peak angle of the solar noon around the solstice last for more days down here then up north. We get 9 days of 62.6 degrees, Newcastle 5 days at 58.5 degrees 🙂

No problem, yes the further south one goes towards the equator the stronger the sun as it's higher in the sky and it lasts longer in that position as you say. It's probable that in the right weather conditions somewhere like Cornwall would be the best place of getting a tan in the mainland UK.

Anywhere along the immediate south/southwest of mainland England from Portsmouth west to Plymouth. Annually the sunniest cities on the mainland are all in this location.

I'm might be wrong but I'm sure it was Plymouth in first place with Southampton & Portsmouth joint Second (or was it joint 3rd), obviously the isle of scilly and the Channel Islands fair better lol.

I just checked out Plymouth on that link. On the. 21st of June it's only 00.03 degrees higher then it is in Portsmouth. Though those lucky channel islanders get to enjoy an angle of 64 degrees 😞

Warm sunny day. On the shady side of street it's currently around 15C but on the sunny side much warmer.
Walked back (in sunshine) from barbers earlier and had a light sweat on my forehead, that was with just a t-shirt on.

Winds is very intermittent but when it does blow It's only 5-10mph.

Enjoying the day after day of sunshine, though - very nice. Long may the wind direction be east of south

Well it took until noon for the sun to get through here, but since then temperatures have responded nicely and risen into the mid-teens. Walking briskly, t-shirts suffice

Heading downtown this evening, the usual spring situation must be faced; it'll be many degrees warmer on the way down than on the way back, and the range is from comfortable in a light fleece to shivering!

Still, it's nothing compared to many continental locations... we have it relatively easy when the air is calm.
