I have started this thread as I thought it will be really interesting to compare the daily weather this month which at least during the next week will be warm and sunny to the very wintry conditions that started 12 months ago and dominated March 2013.

Here in Penrith 10th March 2014 couldn't be any more different to that of 10th March 2013, today the temperatures reached 15.7c under a cloudless sky and calm winds, out in the sun it felt like early summer with the sound of lawn mowers and singing birds. Compare that with exactly a year ago when the town woke to a 6cms cover of dry, powdery snow falling with an unusually low temperature of -7c! Combined with the strong easterly wind conditions during the morning were exceptional for the time of year, even when the snow stopped the temperature didn't reach 1c and their was a severe frost to follow.

During the next 3 weeks the memories of TWO members of last March will be of great interest especially compared to the totally different conditions being experienced this year.

That was quite a remarkable spell of winter-weather as on the night of March 11th, a Channel low coupled with an easterly wind delivered a final sting in the form of near-blizzard conditions here at this end. Yet, that came about after what has been quite a wintry winter on the whole.

This is what greeted me when I took to them thar hills the next day:

It was a remarkable month and didn't seem to warm up until the start of May either - had the Winter duvet on until then! the latest ever.

Not a snow pic as such but this was my bike after a particularly hairy ride home. Still a better option than the traffic as most people who live near me got home after 4-5 hour journeys:-

March 23rd was the biggie for me, the deepest drifts of snow since 1979 around Skipton where i was living this time last year, with many rural low level roads blocked by dry powder snow blowing from the fields with cars buried under drifts 10ft+

14th March (my birthday) was the coldest morning with a low of -7.3c

On this day last year min was -4.1c max 0.8c with a strong east wind and snow showers.

A mean temp for the month of 1.9c, mean min -1.3c mean max 5.1c

A remarkable month

15th March last year was a cold wintry one with an early snowfall leaving a 5cms cover which only thawed slowly under a cloudy sky and max of just 3c.

There was barely a day during March 2013 that we didn't have snow on the ground and we had lots of snowy days.  It went into April too.

This year it's been mild with the sun shining almost every day this month with some surprisingly warm days and although we've had a couple of light frosts they were nothing to write home about.  Hubby mowed our lawns at the weekend, whereas last year they were covered in snow.

I dont have any photo's but this time last year we had snow, my son was away on a golfing weekend which had to be abandoned.

He is this weekend as well but  with glorious weather.

Things didn't get really interested here until later in the momth - one of the best snow events I've witnessed here in many years, if only due to the drifting that occurred - knee-deep and above in places, which is exceptional for an urban and relatively sheltered location. An ice day too - in late March! We had one earlier in the month on the 12th.

Even on the 24th, when we had sunshine, the temperaturer remained below 2C all day with minimal thawing. It was also breezy, so all day we had snow on the ground drifting, blowing across the roads. I recall walking through the local park and cars were having to slow down due to 'ground blizzard' conditions . Snow was continuously being blown off the fields and ont othe road - half of the road ended up being covered in several inches of drifted snow, with a few cars getting stuck.

I was going to wait until the 23rd to post these images, but I can't wait that long - I'll post them now.

A bonus image - taken on the 5th of April, showing snow remnants - hard as rock.

This time last year it was the Easter weekend. Remember how cold that was? I remember Good Friday being beautiful but it was bitter, the hills were covered in snow.

Very similar day temperatures at the moment to this time last year. The main difference was that there was at least some sunshine a year ago so it was nowhere near as unpleasant.

Some interest from frost as well. It got down to -4.8C on the 31st: 2.3C colder than anything this pathetic autumn/winter/spring has produced and it got down to -2.6C on 1st April again colder than anything since.

Not quite 'exactly one year ago' but, as I've missed the date, thought I'd still post these from 23/03/13:

That's a drift, with the top blown over into a curl. It's on flat ground, about 400m from the M62 (near J7), and caused by snow blowing off the field behind that hedge

My back garden - level snow is around 15cm deep.

3C to 5C during the day and a cold wind as well.

Felt awful.
