I spent a night in Southampton last night at a works presentation do. I'm pleased to report a good light show to the N or NW around 23.30hrs- 00.00hrs. Not much rain in Southampton and not too sure if it ever passed overhead as by 1am we were inside a nightclub.

The lightning I did witness was mightliy impressive.

Despite the domination of high pressure, a frontal system slips down from the north later today bringing the threat of showers, some perhaps heavy and thundery. Southern Scotland and Northern England the likely areas to see these showers later this afternoon and into the evening, other areas may see something as they move south through the evening and overnight.

There are some amazing t/s's making their way out of Portugal and Spain into the Bay of Biscay, could even be a supercell by the size of it! Wondering if they'll reach us [sn_shy]

Texts from friends and family in Nottingham and Newark have confirmed torrential thunderstorms and flooding. White returns on the Met Office radar!

Edit: MrsN has arrived home to say she has just driven through a massive rain storm with frequent lightning just south of Cambridge. Still not a drop here and the sun is out, but some notable convective development going on around.
