Quite well handled for several days by the GFS and other models. Not a box office event for most of the country and even in the north where it's having more impact it's not unusual. I've noticed BA are cancelling 10% of flights from Heathrow which surprises me a tad.

Edit: Surprised to see this as the main news story on the Beeb web site at the moment.

i mentioned at the start of the thread that this was most likely not going to be an unusual event just the first such event of the season. With the peak winds due later on for many I guess we will see the overall picture a bit more clearly then.

There's going to be a little bit of everything around the UK today from gales and rain to hail and thunder and even snow on high ground up here.

Autumn.

The BBC have gone all brave reporter in wellies for the day, not sure what they expect to happen - massive over-hyped event.
Cold front has gone through here already by the look of it with less than 3mm.
Wind is picking up though, highest gust of 36mph so far,

Not too bad here at the mo, the odd strong gust, the rain not as bad either. I'm expecting stronger gusts this afternoon when it changes NW.

I never made much on my forecast for my area on this event as it never looked like being anything other than an Autumn storm. The fact that the remains of Hurricane Gonzalo have given the media the impetus to blow everything out of proportion again. I'm beginning to think all media is getting like the Daily Express or Daily Mail and that includes the Beeb. The reporters on Breakfast seem to be struggling to find anything interesting to say on the storm at their various locations in the North, many of them bathed in sunshine. Oh well when will they learn.

Mind I did get a drop of rain and had a few leaves hit me in the car park. That alone must justify the hype?

Just landed an hour or so ago at Manchester airport, pretty hairylanding, heavy squally shower was in progress. The whole plane stank of sick, but that was due to severe turbulence over Syria/Turkey earlier in the flight. I can only assume some pretty big TSTMs were in the area.

Very breezy in liverpool today.  Large and frequent shower clouds moving through every 5 mins.  Ive got stella views from my office window some 200ft up looking south west - see :

This storm is nothing unusual - and has been pumped up by the press.  Probably after a period of warm and calm conditions this is perhaps coming as a bit of a shock.  But in the scale of things is nothing like what we had last winter, and really - if it wasnt for the foliage causing issues with drag in the trees, or blocking the drains - this would be a run of the mill - "Oh its a bit wet and windy today isnt it?" conversation.

Instead - BBC are reporting like we have gone to War on the weather.

Agreed, it's a bit of a combination of the ex-hurricane tag (which is accurate to an extent I guess) and the fact that we haven't had much in the way of autumn storms so far. It is however rather windy in places even if it's not unusual for October. It is also the first time I've seen the blue snow symbols on a short term weather chart (albeit for high ground in the Highlands) http://expert-images.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/2014/10/21/basis06/ukuk/rart/14102118_2_2106.gif

Again absolutely nothing unusual but worth pointing out. If you check some of the webcams this afternoon you may see a temporary sprinkling of the white stuff on some hills (as there already is at Cairngorm).

Just a bit of wet and windy weather that's all.

Its not on the scale of last years storms which really did have an impact and widely to.

What is quite interesting about this is witnessing how high up debris is flying with the wind. Im seeing leaves blown a good 200ft above me, and im on the 10th floor. Its quite a fun game to watch a leaf catch an updraft and hold its position.

a real classic T-storm just passed through Liverpool. With spectacular Mamatous clouds at the back. Within 10 mins it had blown throuh with crystal blue sky behind and a massive anvil rear to it.

great stuff
