Enough to drive anyone mad - no crisp cold sunny days and frosty foggy nights what we like to see in autumn

And according to Gavin more of the same to months end - with possibly a change in start of Nov but not certain

Heaven forbid if this continues into Nov and  Dec and beyond ruining our already slim chances of a cold snowy winter

Does anyone enjoy this boring mild cloudy weather ?

If you came up with this thread this time last year, then yes, I would have agreed with you. But, like I said before, after that living nightmare horror show of last Autumn and Winter, I'm glad that things are still staying on the benign side. Heck, those living towards the south west approaches are still picking up the pieces! I remember when I got told to be careful what to wish for in terms of  wanting exciting lively weather and boy, that was the best advice I've been given.
  Yes, we are going to have to expect an Atlantic driven storm system every now and then and if we are lucky we may get to pick up a notable snow event in the winter. But I, for one, am being glad that this Autumn so far is being relatively gentle to us. The longer I can hold off using the central heating, the better and hopefully my roof will stay intact this time round.

I couldn't agree more Ian. After last year the wild weather can stay away for as long as possible even if it means a lack of wintry conditions. Mild "boring" weather is less harmful even if it is less exciting. Give me fee of snow or crisp cool weather as a first choice but if we are not getting that then mild and not overly wet or windy will do just fine.

Having said all that, those in the NW of Scotland may disagree with the "boring" tag over the next few days!

Edit: We have our heating on for a brief period each day now to take the edge off the evening chill but that is still less than usual.

I echo Ian's comment about the central heating - so far it's hardly been on (just the odd time to get the chill out) and for here to not have it on much is unusual for October. Whilst I enjoy cold & snow I would rather keep my money in my pocket than give it to the greedy energy firms. 

Not boring in the slightest. Days of cold rain are boring. Cold clear days are boring. Winter on the whole is boring. Mild, sunny spells and pleasant is nice. Long may it continue. 

Mild and gloomy is boring yes but cold, crisp and clear would do me fine with some hard overnight frosts and freezing fog lingering into the daytime.

Some snow from time to time and as well as the odd Atlantic storm and squall line would be good to.

The current weather is useable. Consistently mild.  I am happy with it, and the rainfall totals in Western Scotland will be far from boring this weekend.

I think the year as a whole has not been memorable at the local level, so I would say it has been boring. No snow, little frost, largely missed out on thunderstorms, the summer was decent, though. The winter was not that wet around here, so nothing exceptional. It's up there with 2002 with unremarkability, so far.

Yes, it's boring. But with a Halloween party to host on Friday, my wish is for calm conditions until the weekend. Ideally the end of October would be chilly with mist/fog (I'm thinking the Sleepy Hollow film ) but that's pretty rare. I'd also like November 5th to be similar - I remember one bonfire night just like that; the smoke just merged with the fog creating a superb smog and it was fantastic.

Anyway, I love an autumn storm - the more violent the better. Don't like rain much, but if it comes in occasional downpours lasting only a couple of days, then it can be interesting. I was fascinated by the various storms last winter - some of the scenes of flooding were remarkable.

YES IT BORING  hate it, want cold frost snow freeze ....

Don't know  about  smog being "superb" - certainly isn't if you suffer  from bronchial complaints

I can see the  attraction of  severe gales but for me its tempered   by the cost and hassle of damage caused.  When I eventually get round to  constructing the sub subterranean mansion cut into the side of a hillside I'll be happy to  enjoy them to the full.

WRT snow and blizzards,   now I have an extended commute they will have to be "shoehorned"  into  the period between Christmas and the NY when I don't have to commute !

I agree with Ian and I'd rather not have endless gloomy days but we do have to be careful what we wish for.  Last Autumn wasn't too bad for us but watching TV and seeing how others were suffering was far more depressing than benign weather.  As much as I do like cold snowy winters, I don't think we're going to get one this year. 

I agree, the current weather pattern is 'boring' in the sense that I'm not really noticing the weather at the moment when I go out and about...  From a practical perspective that's a good thing (the more boring the bette!), but from the perspective of a weather enthustiast like myself, the weather at the moment doesn't spark much of an interest. 

What I am missing are crisp, fresh, clear days in the 'colder' half of the year... we've had a real dirth of those recently.  2013/14 was incessantly wet and windy, while 2012/13 was significantly colder, but the cold intervals tended to associated with overcast skies....  I have to go way back to February 2012 where we had a few of these, including one particularly cold night if I recall.

The smog only lasted a couple of days - Jesus, if a person's lungs are that bad, then they can stay indoors.

I'll never forget the scenes around the Mersey Estuary & the Wirral last winter, when high tides combined with ferocious winds. To see Liverpool's waterfront, normally metres above the waterline, under water was spellbinding.

I remember a whipper of a storm in autumn (mid-November?) 2010. I'd taken the legs & netting off the trampoline & leant the main part of it against the wall down the side of the house. I got in from work the evening of the storm, after clocking off early to avoid the inevitable congestion, and was dying for a pee. Whilst stood at the downstairs toilet having a wazz, there came first a scraping & knocking sound on the outside wall. I couldn't figure out what it was. Then a big metallic knock on the cloakroom window I was facing. I was puzzled for a moment until I realised the wind had blown the trampoline to roll it along the side of the house, and one of the leg stumps was clattering on the window. Just as I thought "you'd better move that" and made to run, there was that depressing sound of breaking glass. Luckily the leg only smashed the outer skin of the double glazing. The late November & the December that followed was simply amazing.

Oh, and if the snow does come down deep & crisp & even, then declare it a snow day and just don't go into work. Unless your boss is a c*nt (and I appreciate far too many are...), he/she will understand. Then again, I love the challenge of trying to get into work; gives me that reason to go outside and brave the winter elements. It's good fun driving in the snow. Interesting.

Not Boreing. Plenty to out there in the countryside this time of year. Even if it only the clouds...

I do see where you are coming from, but sometimes it is enjoyable to have boring weather too.

I like the idea of 'shoe-horning' the worst of any winter conditions into maybe late Friday evening. Now I drive a lot for work I can be doing without road closures and shovels.

In answer to the question in hand, I guess 'boring' would not be the word I would use. I am a weather enthusiast and as such have a particular interest in the more extreme end of the spectrum, but as age slowly moderates the energy of youth, my outlook has changed over the years to appreciate the more subtle vagaries of our atmosphere. These days a beautiful layered radiation fog is just as impressive as a full gale.

The only thing that is boring IMO is the reducing daylight although that's not the weather!

Meanwhile the short term prospect of huge amounts of rain in the far North-West and the potential of some daytime heat records coming under pressure this week are interesting.

Atlantic based weather, which is the general norm in the UK, is seldom boring anyway. The continued oscillation of the polar front with switches from tropical to polar maritime air ensures enough mobility of actual conditions to mean that things are not usually in a rut for long.

It's horrifically boring, dull and unpleasant and has been for the past 13 months with only the briefest periods of respite.

It's just the same coma-inducing grey dross day in day out. Just no variety at all. Haven't had any rain since Wednesday yet at the same time there's barely been any sun either.

Mild temperatures are restricted to night-times with days only slighlty above average and feeling cold and unpleasant due to the grey skies and nasty wind. 19/25 days with a max between 10.5C and 14.5C. Mean min 1.2C above average whereas mean max only 0.5C above average and likely to diverge further with yet another tedious week coming up.

The temperature has varied by just 14.2C all month and it hasn't got lower than 3.1C all autumn, failing to beat the 3.0C I recorded n August. Another 4C above average min last night but is it 4C above average today? Like hell it is. It's barely any warmer now. 11.7C under grey skies and a horrible cold wind.

There has not been one properly sunny day this month, just day after day of mind-numbing gloom and grey skies. Only managed 6.4 hours sun for the sunniest day which is only 62% of the possible and would be the worst any month in my 8 years of records has managed for the sunniest day. That was back on the 8th, which started dull and wet,  and there's not been one day that has managed 50% of the possible since then. 

This is the very definition of a zero-rated month. Devoid of any interesting or pleasant weather. Thank god I'll be in Tenerife in 3 weeks. Can't wait to see blue skies and non-tepid tempertures. Might see some stormy skies and snow as well like I did there last November. Way more interesting climate than the weather vacuum the UK has turned into. Just look at the satellite today - practically the whole country obscured by cloud
