The last five Saturday's produced a total of 2.6 hours sun and what have I woken up to today? Another revolting grey horrible disgusting abomination of a weekend

3.8C and raining after getting no lower than 2.8C overnight. Depressing in the extreme. The only difference between this winter and last is that so far there is even less snow and frost this year

It's hard for me to recall a more persistently awful 4 month spell of weather than we are currently enduring. The first half of this year was horrific enough but what we have endured since mid-August is off the scale.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say that today would be one of the better line washing days!

Actually, you'd be surprised how things does dry up quite readily here at my coastal location, even though there is that vast expanse of water to my south, like there is that "airy" feel about things.
Yet, at my former hill based greenhouse workplace further inland I've noticed there was always that semi permanent dampness where algae and moss are thriving on everything, heck it would form on me if I stood still for long enough. The only time it does seem to properly dry up at that end is during high summer. It's little wonder why there had always been that constant battle with mildew, mould and botrytis on tomato plants.

When we get winds in from the WNW/NW here it's often damp or showery as the air has tracked over some 100 miles of the Irish Sea and we're only some 30 miles or so from the coast in that direction; the air crosses the Cheshire Plain then rises as it meets the higher ground here. As you know, we're in a considerable rain-shadow here if the winds blow in from the NE/E/SE - thanks to the nearby hills and also to a lesser degree are sheltered by The Welsh Mountains - if the winds are in the W or SW! Definitely more damp here than my old East Midlands location - when the winds are in the right direction!
