You would have thought with a major event overnight, that they could find an up to date forecast. Terrible.

21:55 weather

H Willets

25 mm of rain overnight in parts , powerful winds tonight and for parts of the NW tomorrow

widespread and hard frosts through the weekend

potential for lengthy spells of snow with areas of low pressure

Showed the sliders , and mentioned they could be repeated a few times before an eventual breakdown

according to the bbc weather we have a 7 - 10 day cold with plenty of wide spread snow before the atlantic wins back and pushes the cold out, then we back to mild.

Haha Classic blooper and fraudulent slip by Helen Willetts just now in the BBC weather forecast" She said something like  - "It looks like we will be in a cold spell of weather now for a couple of years!"

Did anyone pick on this?

UK Outlook for Monday 19 Jan 2015 to Wednesday 28 Jan 2015:

Dry, cold and clear for much of central Britain on Monday and Tuesday with showers affecting many coastal counties away from the south, readily falling as sleet and snow. There will be a widespread frost overnight and some localised patches of freezing fog which may be slow to clear through the day. Through the rest of next week, the general cold conditions will persist bringing an ongoing risk of snow, more especially in northern and eastern areas. Temperatures will be generally below average with overnight frosts, locally severe. Towards the end of the period there looks to be a possible return to more generally unsettled conditions with rain, strong winds and temperatures perhaps nearer to normal for the time of year.

Subtle changes in the MetO outlook on their site this morning. The forecast for rain or snow on Monday in the southeast regional text is now gone, but it's appeared on the southwest regional and it wasn't there yesterday.

Interesting bit on the Chris Evans show on radio 2 this morning at 07:15 about thunder snow, explaining how and why etc. Can't remember the forecasters name (couldn't write it down as I was driving - how remiss of me!). It will be on the BBC iPlayer later today if anyone is interested.

Well Q might well agree with this, but would complain about the lack of lake effect snow in mid-February 2016

Seriously if she meant 'a couple of weeks' that is a huge turnaround from the MetO via the broadcast media. The only negative thing should we see snowfall next week is Madden and his cronies will be sharpening their pencils and I find the mere thought of it nauseating.

Already the GFS(P) has backed off from the Fri-Mon snowfalls IMBY, that it had consistently showed up until late yesterday/this morning.

The thing to do is to stay tuned!

Met update:

UK Outlook for Tuesday 20 Jan 2015 to Thursday 29 Jan 2015:

Cloud and rain, sleet or snow will gradually spread in from the west during Tuesday, with the risk of some snow accumulations inland, and heavy rain in the southwest. However, eastward progression of this system is uncertain, with eastern parts likely staying drier and brighter. It will also become windier, with gales on exposed coasts, and cold overnight with frost possible. Wednesday and Thursday should remain cold, with wintry showers, although these will gradually ease, with sheltered western parts turning drier. Rain remains most likely across the south, with central parts at greatest risk of seeing some snowfall. Into the weekend, drier conditions are likely to develop from the north, but staying cold. However more unsettled weather could return the following week, with temperatures rising nearer-normal.

A mention of -10C for rural Northern Ireland and -12C across rural parts of Scotland [on Sunday morning] on the 1:30 weather just now on BBC One. Not much in the way of snow (or any precipitation, for that matter) away from the Highlands over the weekend... but that can and doubtless will change over the coming model runs!

The GFS snow fall & accumulation charts continue to show promise for here - but the BBC NW News weather I've just seen totally played down the chances of snow here, especially in the southern half of the region. I know the 'presenter' is devout mild-junky (with little Met background/education ) but, combined with the forecasts on the MetO site, I'm starting to get worried.
